MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Just as the Edgewood College softball team did yesterday, they earned a two game sweep of a conference foe. This time the sweep came at Wisconsin Lutheran College by the scores of 5-4 and 5-1. Jessica Spitzer continued her tear to start the season as she went 5-for-7 on the day.
Edgewood College (6-8, 4-2 NAC) opened the scoring early in game one as Emily Monson led off the game with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Pam Sommer. Monson then stole third and after Spitzer walked, she came in to score on a double steal as Spitzer stole second on the play. After a Colleen Joyce single, Rachel Elliott smashed a double that scored Spitzer to make the score 2-0 in the top of the first inning.
Wisconsin Lutheran (3-15, 0-10 NAC) threatened to score in the second inning as their leadoff hitter walked and advanced to third before another walk that put runners on the corners with no outs. However, the Eagles would get out of the jam as Elliott, who was pitching, got the next batter to hit a groundball to Spitzer at shortstop who then tossed the ball to Kayla Rackow at second base for the first out. Rackow then threw the ball home to cut down the Warrior runner at the plate and keep the score at 2-0.
After Edgewood College left the bases loaded in the top of the third inning, Wisconsin Lutheran came back and tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Jenny Boelk led off the inning with a single then scored on a Maggie Mueller double to cut the deficit in half. Mueller advance to third and scored on a sacrifice fly later in the inning to tie the game at two after three innings.
However, the Eagles made sure the game did not stay tied for long as they responded in the top of the fourth inning. Claire Blake started the inning with a single and Karmen Dorshorst pinch ran for her. After consecutive pop outs, Spitzer drove in Dorshorst when she ripped a triple and scored on an error to give the Eagles a 4-2 lead.
Edgewood College tacked on a well needed insurance run the top of the fifth inning as Elliott led off the inning with a single and later came around to score on a Hannah Grossen ground out to give the Eagles a 5-2 lead.
After Wisconsin Lutheran tallied a couple of unearned runs in the fifth inning, the Eagles went to their bullpen. Blake came into pitch and got the first batter she faced to ground into a fielder's choice to end the threat and preserve the one run lead.
Neither team would score the rest of the way as Blake did not allow a base runner over the final two innings, giving the Eagles the 5-4 victory. In the contest, Elliott earned her first win of the season in four and two-thirds innings of work while Blake earned her first career save as she threw the final two and one-third innings. At the plate it was Spitzer that led Edgewood College as she went 3-for-3 and was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. She also scored two runs and drove in another.
The Eagles jumped out early again in game two with one run in the top of the first inning. After Monson and Sommer drew back-to-back walks to start the game, they advanced to third and second, respectively on a fly out. Monson then scored on a Joyce ground out to give Edgewood College the 1-0 lead.
Blake started the game in the circle and did not allow a hit until the fourth inning. After recording the first two outs of the fourth inning, Blake gave up a single and double before walking the next batter to load the bases. The Warriors got on the board when Morgan Ditmar came into score on a passed ball. Blake then struck out the next batter to end the threat and keep the score at 2-1 in favor of the Eagles.
Edgewood College extended their lead in the fifth inning as Monson reached on an error to start the inning, then scored on a Spitzer double. After a Joyce single, Kristen Salvatore walked to load the bases. Monica Humphrey then drove in Spitzer and Joyce with a single to give Edgewood College a 5-1 lead.
From that point on, Blake only allowed three base runners over the final three innings to give the Eagles the 5-1 victory. In two appearances on the day, Blake threw nine and one-third innings and allowed one run on only three hits while striking out five. Spitzer and Joyce led the Eagle offense in game two as they each went 2-for-4 and scored one run while driving in one apiece.
In both games, Spitzer went 5-for-7 with three runs scored two runs batted in. She also is the only Eagle to record a hit in every game this season and extended her hit streak to 14-games to start her career.
The Eagles will next be in action on Tuesday when the host Concordia University Wisconsin at Ceniti Park in Verona. Edgewood College will provide live stats and live video for the double header that is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. The links can be found on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
