TUCSON, Ariz. – In their final game of their spring trip in Tucson, the Edgewood College softball team played conference foe Marian University in doubleheader on Sunday. At the end of the day, the Sabres came away with a sweep as they won game one 10-1 and game two 6-3.
Through three innings, it looked like the Eagles (2-6) were locked in a pitchers dual with the Sabres (7-4) as there were only three base runners for both teams combined in those innings. Marian then started the scoring with two outs in the fourth inning when Jenna Whitehead hit a home run to left field. The Sabres went on to score four more runs in the inning to take a five run lead.
Edgewood College answered in the bottom half of the inning when Pam Sommer reached on an error to lead off the inning. She then scored on a Jessica Spitzer triple to left field to cut the deficit to 5-1.
Just as they did in the fourth inning, Marian scored five runs in the fifth inning. The inning was highlighted by an Ashley Engler two-run home run to left field and back-to-back run scoring singles to push their lead to 10-1. The Eagles could not make another comeback as they fell by the same score in five innings do to the eight run mercy rule.
Spitzer tallied the Eagles only hit of the contest while going 1-for-2 and driving in Edgewood College's only run. Claire Blake started the game for the Eagles and went 4 and one third innings while Brittany Andrews threw the final two thirds of an inning.
In game two it was the Eagles that got on the board first, this time in the top of the first inning. Emily Monson was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and after a strike out, Spitzer reached on an infield single. Colleen Joyce then loaded the bases when she ripped a single to left center field. After another strike out, Hannah Grossen and Monica Humphrey drew back-to-back run scoring walks to put the Eagles up 2-0 in the first inning.
The Sabres answered with one run in the third after their leadoff hitter ripped a triple on the first pitch of the inning and scored on a ground out by Amy Malcore. Marian then took the lead in the second inning as they plated three more runs. The inning was highlighted by a couple run scoring singles to make the score 4-2.
Marian had an opportunity to break the game open when the loaded the bases in the third inning with only one out. However, the Sabres only scored one run as Rachel Elliott struck out back-to-back Sabres to end the threat and keep the score at 5-2. The Sabres tacked on an insurance run in the fourth to extend their lead to 6-2.
Edgewood College cut the deficit to three in the fifth inning when Spitzer and Joyce opened the inning with consecutive singles. Spitzer then scored on Grossen double down the left field line and the score was 6-3 at the end of five innings.
The Eagles threatened to score again in the sixth and seventh innings as they had two runners on base in both innings. However, the Eagles could not push across any runs as they fell 6-3.
Joyce led the Eagle offense as she was 3-for-4 in game two while Spitzer went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Elliott threw all six innings and struck out two Sabres while giving up six runs, only three of which were earned.
