Box Score (St. Joseph's)
Box Score (Calvin)
TUCSON, Ariz. – Just as they did yesterday, the Edgewood College softball team won one game and lost the other. First the Eagles avenged yesterday's defeat to St. Joseph's College with a 5-4 win, and then they fell to Calvin College 15-0 in the second game.
Kristen Salvatore gave Edgewood College (2-3) a 2-0 lead over St. Joseph's (5-1) when she smoked a two-run home run to left field in the second inning. Rachel Elliott also scored on the play after she led off the inning with a double. Edgewood College then tacked on a pair of runs in the third inning. After Pam Sommer reached on with an infield single, Jessica Spitzer laced a double to center field. Both runs came into score on back-to-back St. Joseph's errors.
The Bears came roaring back in the fourth inning. St. Joseph's Andrea Sideli ripped a three-run double to center field to pull St. Joseph's with in a run. Sideli later came into score and tie the game at four on a Lauren Norris double. On that same play, the Eagles cut down the potential go-ahead run at home plate on a nice relay play that was started by centerfielder Emily Monson. Spitzer then relayed it to Salvatore at home plate who tagged out the runner to end the inning and keep the game tied at four.
With two outs in the fifth inning, Spitzer sparked the Eagle offense when she reached on an infield single. Colleen Joyce then followed with a double to score Spitzer and give the Eagles a 5-4 lead.
The Bears threatened to tie the contest in the seventh inning when their leadoff hitter walked. After a couple outs, Millicia Malvasio singled to put runners on first and second. However, pitcher Claire Blake bounced back and got a strike out to end the game and give the Eagles the 5-4 victory.
On the day, Blake tallied eight strikeouts, including five in the first two innings and earned her second complete game win in as many days. Spitzer went 3-for-3 at the plate and scored two runs while Salvatore belted the fifth home run of her career and drove in two runs.
Game two did not go as well for the Eagles as they fell behind Calvin (6-4) early and they could not spark a comeback. The Knights scored runs in each of the first three innings, three in both the first and second innings and two in the third inning. Both runs in the third inning came on a Hannah DeWeerd home run to left field.
Calvin then erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning to take a commanding 15-0 lead as they took the game by that score in five innings due to the eight run mercy rule.
Spitzer tallied the Eagles only hit of the game in the fourth inning. In the game, Edgewood College committed seven errors to the Knights one error. Calvin also belted out 12 hits in the victory. Elliott started the game in the circle for the Eagles and was relieved by Brittany Andrews in the second inning.
Edgewood College will be in action again tomorrow when they face conference foe Marian University at 9:00 a.m. Mountain Time tomorrow morning. Edgewood College will be providing live stats for the contest, and the link can be found on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
