ATLANTA, Ga. - Senior first baseman Tim Barry recorded five hits, including a home run, and drove in six runs on the day as the Edgewood College baseball team opened their annual spring break with a doubleheader split against Emory University at Chappell Park. Edgewood College took game one 7-6, before falling 10-5 in the nightcap.
In the opening game, Emory University (12-11) got on the board early, plating three runs in the bottom of the first, all after two outs. Kevin O'Connor did the biggest damage for Emory with a two-run single to give the home team a 3-0 lead off Eagle starter Scott Winters.
Edgewood College (6-2) tied the game with three of their own in the top of the third inning. Scott Ortega led off with a walk followed by Jake Zadra's second base hit of the game. Emory starter Marc Terranova then unloaded a pair of wild pitches, the second of which scored Ortega and put Zadra on third. One batter later Jimy Landwehr drove him home with an RBI single to left field, where he eventually scored on Steve Binder's two-out RBI single to tie the game at 3-3.
In the top of the fifth, Barry put the Eagles on top 5-3, blasting the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for his second home run of the season. Landwehr, who had walked was aboard for the ride. However, Emory got an infield RBI single and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game again.
The Eagles broke through again in the top of the seventh inning. Zadra led off with a walk and Walker reached when Emory relief pitcher Bryan Cournoyer couldn't handle his sacrifice bunt attempt. Landwehr then laid down his own bunt, and beat it out for an infield single, loading the bases. In his at-bat, Barry fell behind 0-2, but battled back for a full count. He then delivered a line drive into center field which scored both Zadra and Walker for the go-ahead runs.
Emory made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh. A walk and a single off Eagle reliever James Bertakis put two runners on with two outs. The Eagles seemed to have wrapped the game up when Patrick Riebsame popped up into short right center field. However, Eagle second baseman Ortega lost the ball in the high sky and it fell to the ground allowing one run to score and cutting the Eagles' lead to 7-6. Bertakis walked the next hitter, but regrouped and got pinch hitter Scott Schwartz to fly out to Landwehr in center field with the bases loaded to end the game.
Freshman Patrick Clerkin earned the first win of his career by pitching a perfect sixth inning. Bertakis earned his second save of the season. Winters threw two innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out one, while Blake O'Brien threw three innings, surrendering one earned run.
Barry matched a career-high with three hits and three at-bats and notched the second four RBI game of his career. The home run was the ninth of his career, moving him into a tie for fifth place on the Edgewood College all-time home run list. Zadra notched the first two-hit game of his young career with a pair of singles and two runs scored. Landwehr matched Zadra with two hits and two runs scored.
The nightcap started like the opener, with Emory scoring three times in the first inning, but on this occasion Edgewood College would not recover. Barry drove in another run with an RBI groundout in the first inning, scoring Treye Dennison who started the game with a base on balls. From that point, Emory would open up a 4-1 lead in the first two innings against Eagle starter Miles Mayer.
Edgewood College scored single runs in the third and fifth innings. Landwehr drove home Ortega with a sacrifice fly in the third and Barry tallied his sixth RBI of the day with a run scoring single in the fifth, but by the end of the seventh inning Emory had opened up a 10-3 lead. The Eagles boosted their confidence with a pair of runs in the ninth inning when Landwehr and pinch hitter Mike Selvaggi notched back-to-back RBI singles to make the final margin 10-5.
Landwehr, Barry and Seth Astroth each had two hits for the Eagles, with Landwehr and Barry adding a pair of RBIs each. Walker scored two runs for the Eagles in the losing effort. Mayer suffered the loss, but five Eagle pitchers combined to strikeout nine Emory hitters.
Edgewood College will drive south to Florida and begin preparations for the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The Eagles will open the event on Sunday against St. Olaf College (Minn.) in Vero Beach, Fla. The Eagles will play the Oles, Purchase College (N.Y.) and top-ranked, defending national champion University of St. Thomas twice each.
