PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Baseball kicked off their final week of regular season NACC action Tuesday. They took on the Lakeland Muskies in a road doubleheader. The Eagles (18-17, 12-10 NACC) put together an impressive 13-0 showing in game one, but the Muskies (13-25, 6-16) rallied for a 10-9 victory in 10 innings in game two.
GAME ONE: EDGEWOOD UNIVERSITY 13, LAKELAND 0
- After a scoreless three innings to start, the Eagles broke through with an
Aidan Kammer RBI double to right center in the fourth. Kammer added on a sacrifice fly to right field in the sixth as the Edgewood University offense began to click.
Mac Vesperman followed with an RBI single to right field, while
Dominic Lee made it 4-0 Eagles with a sacrifice bunt.
- After a
Kyle Prindle RBI single in the seventh and a
Hayden Hellenbrand RBI in the eighth, a seven-run ninth put things well out of reach. After a miscue from the Muskies opened the scoring, Lee walked and
Charlie Tompach took a hit by pitch with the bases loaded to keep the pressure on.
Carter Kelley doubled down the left field line for two more runs. Hellenbrand came back to bat in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Jacob Carney put a bow on the first game with an RBI single.
- Aidan Shumaker put together a brilliant complete game. He fanned 12 Lakeland batters, allowed only five hits, and walked one batter.
- Carney hit 3-for-4 with an RBI and a double. Hellenbrand posted a triple and two RBIs.
- It was a team effort on offense, with eight Eagles recording RBIs. Eight Edgewood University batters also tallied runs.
GAME TWO: LAKELAND 10, EDGEWOOD UNIVERSITY 9 (10 INNINGS)
- After a Kammer single to right in the top of the first, the Muskies hit their stride with a five-run bottom of the first. A pair of sacrifice bunts, a two-RBI double, and a grounder had the hosts rolling.
- The Eagles punished Lakeland for mistakes in the second. Hellenbrand hit a two-RBI single to left field, while an error in the outfield helped another runner cross home. A Carney ground out evened the game 5-5 after two.
- The pitchers settled in as neither offense hit the board again until the sixth. A two-RBI double to left field and a two-run homer to right put the Muskies ahead 9-5. Edgewood University struck back with a four-run seventh, a Prindle single, a Lee two-RBI single to right center, and a
Ben Truby single through the right side tying things once more.
- The Eagle struggled to take advantage of runners in scoring position late in the game as the teams went to extra innings. A leadoff double from Lakeland spelled trouble in the bottom of the tenth, and the Muskies would walk it off with a bases-loaded bunt.
- Chris Finn recorded the home run for Lakeland. Sawyer Laffoon was the hero for the Muskies, walking off the extra innings thriller and finishing hitting 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two walks.
- Hellenebrand swung 4-for-6 with two RBIs and three runs.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Edgewood Univeristy clinched a trip to the NACC Tournament with their victory in game one. The trip is their fifth in a row.
- The loss in game two snapped a 10-game winning streak against Lakeland.
