RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Coming into the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament semifinal between the Edgewood College women's soccer team and Dominican University, both teams knew they would be in for a low scoring affair. The contest came down to which team would blink first, and unfortunately it was the Eagles. In the 95th minute, the Stars netted the games first goal and took the 1-0 overtime victory to move into the tournament final.
The first half was a defensive battle, as there were only four total shots taken in the frame, three by the Stars (15-4-1) and one by Edgewood College, with none being on net. The Stars put pressure on the Eagles early in the frame, taking a shot and two corner kicks in the first 18 minutes. The Eagles (15-5-1) turned the tide late in the half, and
Kristina Santaga took the Eagles' first shot in the 41st minute.
At the beginning of the second half, Edgewood College had a couple opportunities early. Santaga ripped a shot wide only one minute into the frame and in the 58th minute, the Eagles earned a corner kick and
Clare Schumacher took a shot.
The Stars had a couple opportunities before the Eagles brought play back to the other end of the field. Edgewood College took three corner kicks in 42 seconds, but could not get a shot on net. In the 89th minute, goalkeeper
Kristi Frisch made sure the game went to overtime scoreless when she saved an Ashley Meyer shot.
In the extra session, Edgewood College took another unsuccessful corner kick in the 94th minute. Off the corner kick, ball deflected to midfield where Dominican's Nallely Arreola picked up the ball. She carried the ball down field and shook a defender to clear herself for a shot from 20 yards out. Arreola rifled her shot just out of Frisch's reach into the upper right corner of the net to send the Stars to conference tournament final with the 1-0 overtime victory.
