MADISON, Wis. – In their regular season finale, the Edgewood College women's soccer team had a chance to earn the third seed in the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament if they could beat Maranatha Baptist. The Eagles scored first, and tallied three second half goals to top the Crusaders 4-0 and earn the third seed in the NAC Tournament.
With the win, Edgewood College (14-4-1, 9-3 NAC) earned the third seed in the NAC Tournament that begins on Sunday. The Eagles will host the sixth seed, Marian University at noon.
The Eagles tried to put pressure on the Crusaders (9-6, 6-6 NAC) in the first 10 minutes, but Edgewood College got called offside three separate times.
Elaine Gerry ripped the Eagles' first shot in the 12th minute, and it was turned away by Korrine Israel, the Crusader goalkeeper.
After a corner kick, the Eagles had a couple more opportunities just three minutes later as
Brianna Franken had a shot sail just high. However, Franken broke through in the 17th minute when she took a shot from 25 yards that bounced on the ground and off Israel's hands before trickling into the net to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
Franken struck again in the second half, this time from the left side of the pitch. She took pass from Gerry and placed a shot that bounced off the right post and in to push the Eagles' lead to 2-0 in the 60th minute.
Edgewood College put the lead out of reach when they tallied two goals in three minute span. First in the 70th minute, Gerry converted her fourth penalty kick of the season, placing it in the upper left hand corner of the net. With the converted penalty kick, Gerry became Edgewood College's all-time leader in penalty kicks made with four. Gerry tallied her second goal of the game in the 73rd minute when she received a pass from
Molly Haertle and put her shot into the left side of the net.
In the 4-0 win, Edgewood College outshot the Crusaders 18-2 and had more corner kicks, 4-2. Israel made five saves for the Crusaders while
Kristi Frisch and
Amber Hranicka combined for the Eagles' 10th shutout of the year.
Edgewood College's season will continue this Saturday when they host Marian University in the first round of the NAC Tournament. The kickoff is schedule for 12:00 p.m. at Breese Stevens Field.
