Eagles take pair at Concordia Chicago Triangular

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Edgewood College women's volleyball team bounced back from their defeat on Friday night to Dominican University by winning both matches at the Concordia University Chicago Triangular. The Eagles ended their three-match skid with a 3-1 win over Concordia Chicago before sweeping Purdue University Calumet.

The Eagles (16-13, 9-2 NAC) rebounded with a Northern Athletics Conference win against Concordia Chicago (9-16, 3-8 NAC) after dropping their last two conference matches. Edgewood College is currently tied for second place in the NAC standings with Dominican University, only one game behind Concordia University Wisconsin with just one game left in NAC play.

In the first match against Concordia Chicago, the Eagles came out and took the first set 25-20 before falling behind early in the second set. The Cougars took a 10-6 lead in the second set before the Eagles mounted a comeback. Edgewood College rolled off four straight points to tie the set at 10 and took a 14-12 lead. The Eagles went on another 4-0 run to take a 20-17 lead and force a Cougar timeout. After the timeout, the Cougars outscored the Eagles 6-5, but Edgewood College took the set 25-23 to take a commanding 2-0 lead.

Trailing 24-21 in the third set, the Eagles used a timeout. Out of the timeout, Aryn Wellnitz hammered home a kill, which was followed by a Kristin Manske ace to get the Eagles within one point. However, the Cougars won the next point to take the set 25-23.

Edgewood College came out and took the third set 25-16 to take the match 3-1. The Eagles set a school record by hitting a blistering .473 in the match. The previous best was .407 which was set in 1999 against Wisconsin Lutheran College. That mark also ranks second in the NAC this season, as Maranatha Baptist hit .483 earlier this season.

Mallory Palmer led the Eagles with 18 kills and Jessica Martin pounded out 12 more kills. Lindsey Swansby accounted for 44 assists and Kim Lueck recorded a team-high nine digs.

In the night cap against Purdue University Calumet (2-13), the Eagles jumped out early and didn't look back. Laura Sweeney ended the first set with three straight aces to give the Eagles the 25-16 win. Sweeney ended the match with a season-high four aces.

The Eagles continued to stay hot, taking the next two sets 25-15 and 25-20 to win the match 3-0. As a team, Edgewood College served up 11 aces which marked the third time this season the Eagles have had more than 10 aces in a match. The last time was against UW-Stout when they had 12 aces.

Wellnitz recorded a team-high nine kills while Katie Wedvick and Martin accounted for seven kills apiece. Lueck led the Eagles again with nine digs and Lindsey Swansby handed out 36 assists.

The Eagles will close NAC play on Wednesday night when they travel to take on MSOE. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
