RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Edgewood College women's volleyball team tried to bounce back after dropping their first conference game on Tuesday night. However, their struggles continued as Dominican University came out and attacked the Eagles, taking the match 3-0.
With the loss, the Eagles (14-13, 8-2 NAC) fall into a second place tie with Dominican (19-6, 8-2 NAC) with just two Northern Athletics Conference games left.
The Stars jumped out to a quick 9-3 lead and forced an Edgewood College timeout. The Eagles battled back and got within three points at 13-10 and 19-16, but the Stars answered and extended the lead each time. Trailing 24-18, the Eagles went on a run to cut the deficit to three, but couldn't keep the momentum going, dropping the set 25-21.
Leading 10-7 in the second set, Dominican used an 8-1 run to take control of the set at 18-8. The Stars then outscored the Eagles 7-5 to take the second set 25-13.
Trailing 4-3, the Eagles went on a quick 5-0 scoring spurt to take an 8-4 lead in the third set and force a Dominican timeout. However, the Stars came right back to tie the score at 10 and take an 11-10 lead before the Eagles scored the next point to tie the set at 11. Dominican then scored six straight points to take a commanding 17-11 lead before
Aryn Wellnitz ended the streak with one of her two kills in the match. It was not enough as the Stars outscored the Eagles 8-7 the rest of the way to take the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.
Mallory Palmer led the Eagles with nine kills and
Kim Lueck registered a match-high 12 digs. For the Stars it was Darcy Kammeier that led the way with 15 kills and was the only player to reach double figures in kills in the match.
Edgewood College will not have to sit on the loss long as they play at Concordia University Chicago on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The Eagles will then play Purdue-Calumet at 12:30 p.m.
