MADISON, Wis. - The match against the Regents wasn't always pretty, but it was effective enough to help the Edgewood College volleyball team establish a new school record for consecutive victories. The Eagles improved to 8-0 in the Northern Athletics Conference and won their eighth straight match with a 3-0 sweep of Rockford College on Wednesday night at the Edgedome.
Edgewood College (14-10, 8-0 NAC) broke free from a close 9-8 first set with a 5-0 run thanks to
Kristin Manske. Manske started the run with a kill and then proceeded to serve off the next four points in a row, aided by kills from
Brittany Bylsma and
Mallory Palmer. After that run, Palmer put the set out of reach from the Regents, serving six straight points including three service aces, for a 22-10 lead. The Eagles went on to a 25-16 victory.
Like the first set, the Eagles never trailed in the second set, but couldn't shake Rockford College (4-14, 3-5 NAC) until late. Freshman
Jessica Martin started to find her rhythm in the second set, pounding out four kills in six attack attempts against just one error. After being tied at 12, the Eagles pulled away with an 8-1 run, capped by Bylsma delivering a service ace for a 20-13 lead.
Katie Wedvick finished the set with a kill for a 25-18 victory.
Rockford College gained their first lead of the match with a 6-1 run to start the third set, but the Eagles answered with a 6-1 run of their own to tie the set at seven apiece. Edgewood College gained control for good on a run of five service points from
Sam Himmelspach to take a 16-9 lead. Martin added two kills during that run and finished with four for the set, which the Eagles claimed 25-19.
The victory clinched a NAC Tournament berth for Edgewood College for the third time in the last four years. The Eagles maintain a one-game lead over Concordia University Wisconsin for first place in the conference.
Martin was the only Eagle in double digits in kills with 10 on the night.
Dacy Swansby matched a season-high with six kills and hit a team-high .357 for the match.
Kim Lueck topped the digs list with nine for Edgewood College. The Eagles recorded seven service aces, but were plagued by 10 service errors. Rockford College was led by Emily Kaufman's five kills.
Edgewood College will be back in action tomorrow night at the Todd Wehr Edgedome facing Midwest Conference member Carroll University (12-8). The match begins at 7:00 p.m. and can
