Eagles and Green Knights play to 1-1 draw

MADISON, Wis. – In what was their third game in six days, the Edgewood College women's soccer team seemed to run out of gas in the second half of their contest with St. Norbert College. The Eagles took the lead in the first frame, but the Green Knights came back and tied the score in the second half. Neither team scored a goal in the final 25 minutes or overtime as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Each team had an opportunity early to take the lead. The Eagles' chance came in just the seventh minute when Brianna Franken ripped a shot that was saved by St. Norbert's keeper, Cara Tazioli. Only five minutes later the Green Knights (5-7-1) countered with their opportunity, a shot that was turned away by the Eagle net minder, Kristi Frisch. Frisch ended the contest with three saves on 11 St. Norbert shots.

Elaine Gerry broke through and gave the Eagles (10-3-1) the lead in the 24th minute when she converted on her third penalty kick of the season. With the conversion, Gerry now holds the school record for most made penalty kicks in the season with three and she is tied for the career record for most penalty kicks made.

St. Norbert came out and controlled play in the second half, outshooting the Eagles 4-1 in the half. In the 65th minute, Nicole Hynes tallied the equalizer. Zoe Kurth took a free kick from 25 yards out on the right, the ball crossed to the left side and Hynes was there to redirect the ball back to the right to tie the game at one.

The Eagles countered with pressure, taking two corner kicks in a two minute span and sending their only shot of the second half high in the 76th minute. Neither team threatened from that point on the game went to overtime. The first overtime was a defensive battle with no shots taken between the two teams and the game went to double overtime.

The Green Knights had three chances to win the game in the second extra session. Katherine Larson sent a shot high in the 102nd minute and Kellan Zimmer had two opportunities just a minute apart. First she had a breakaway with only four minutes to go, but her shot went wide and just a minute later, she had a shot blocked.

The Eagles had two opportunities to score in overtime, taking two corner kicks in the final three minutes. The second one came with 35 seconds left, but Edgewood College could not convert and the gamed ended in a 1-1 tie.

Edgewood College gets the opportunity to bounce back on Wednesday night when they travel to seventh ranked Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
