WHEATON, Ill. – After a week that saw Edgewood College win all five of their matches, this week did not go as well for the Eagles. They lost all four matches at the Wheaton College Invitational, where the closest match came against conference opponent Lakeland College in the final match of the tournament.

The Eagles (7-10) kicked off the tournament against University of Chicago (11-7). Edgewood College struggled to get their offense going as they hit only .148 for the match. Nina Brown led the Eagle offense with eight kills while Ellie Peckham added 12 assists. The loss ended Edgewood College's longest winning streak since 2006 at five matches.

Next, Edgewood College faced off against eventual tournament champion Cornell College (14-3), in a match that saw the Eagle offense get off to another slow start. After dropping the first two sets, the Eagles fought back to take the third game 25-23 to force a fourth set. However the Rams came out firing in the fourth set and put Edgewood College away with a decisive 25-15 victory to take the match. Freshman Mallory Palmer was the only Eagle in double figures for kills, as she led the team with 11.

After dropping both matches on Friday, the Eagles regrouped for Saturday when they played host Wheaton College (9-7). Edgewood College came out firing as the hit pounded out 16 kills in the first set and hit .226. Nevertheless it was not enough as the Thunder took the set 25-21 and the match 3-0 behind stellar defensive play. Palmer once again led the Eagles in kills with 12 while Kim Lueck tallied 19 digs.

To finish the tournament, the Edgewood College played a familiar opponent, conference rival Lakeland College (10-4). The Eagles got off to a hot start as they took the first set from the Muskies 25-20. Lakeland responded with wins in the next two sets, 25-17 and 25-14, respectively. However the Eagles did not give up as they fought back and put together their best set of the tournament. In the fourth set they hit a blistering .350 with 17 kills in the 25-17 victory to push the match to a fifth and final set. In the fifth set the Muskies got off to quick start and took a 6-2 lead. Edgewood College would fight back but it was not enough as the Muskies held off the Eagle attacks to take the set 15-11. Palmer led the Eagles again with 17 kills while Peckham added 22 assists.

The Eagles will next be in action on Tuesday when the travel to Lakeland College to face the Muskies again. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
