AURORA, Ill. - The rivalry between Edgewood College and Aurora University in women's soccer has been so good, everyone expects a close, exciting finish when these two teams meet. Sunday afternoon at Vago Field was no exception as the Spartans gained a small measure of revenge for last year's NAC Tournament title match with a 2-1 victory over the Eagles.
In this meeting, Abby Moder scored the tying goal for Edgewood College (1-2, 0-1 NAC) with less than ten minutes to play. Moder was assisted by a corner kick from Tammi Hagensick who scored the only goal in the Eagles' 1-0 NAC Tournament triumph last season.
However this time, the Spartans (3-2, 1-0 NAC) had an answer in Jessica Novickas. Novickas took a pass from Spartan leading scorer Haley Pschirrer and beat Eagle goalkeeper Ilana Bar-av for the game-winning goal with 3:29 left to play. The Eagles were unable to generate another shot on goal before time expired.
Despite taking the loss, Bar-av established a new career-high with 12 saves in the game. Moder's goal was her team-high fourth of the season.
Edgewood College will return to the field on Wednesday, for a road contest at Concordia University Wisconsin. Game time against the Falcons is 4:00 p.m.
