MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College softball team finally took to the field after a 14-day hiatus. Four straight postponed doubleheaders delayed the start of Northern Athletics Conference play for the Eagles and the time away showed as Concordia Wisconsin swept their conference opening doubleheader by scores of 4-3 and 7-0 in Mequon on Thursday.
The Eagles (4-8, 0-2 NAC) struggled to get out of the first inning of game one against the Falcons, surrendering three runs on only two hits. In the next half inning, Edgewood College got a couple runs back on Stephanie Schafer's first home run of the season. In the bottom of the second, the Falcons' Sarah Cochran led off with a solo shot to extend the lead to 4-2.
In the Edgewood College fifth, two hits and an error loaded the bases with nobody out. The next batter was Colleen Joyce whose come-backer to the pitcher led to Leslie Osman being forced out at home. On an effort to turn a double play, catcher Angela Ward's error allowed Emily Monson to score from second base. After a groundout, a walk to Rachel Elliott loaded the bases once more, but a strikeout by Charli Metcalf ended the threat. It was the final threat of the game for the Eagles who fell by the narrowest of margins, by a score of 4-3. Jenna Ryan took the loss and fell to 3-5 on the year.
In game two it was all Concordia Wisconsin (8-12, 2-2 NAC). Edgewood College managed just four hits in the game, two of which came from Elliott. Again, the Falcons did all of their damage in the early innings, scoring one in the first, two in the second and four in the third to cruise to a 7-0 victory. Elliott threw 2.1 innings, giving up all seven runs, four of which were earned and fell to 0-3 on the season. Brittany Andrews came on in the third and gave up just one hit while striking out one.
The Eagles will look to redeem themselves this Saturday when they take on Benedictine in their home opener at Ceniti Park in Verona, Wis. First pitch is slated for noon.
