VERONA, Wis. – Pitching hasn't been a strong suit for the Eagles this season, but today it was. The Eagle pitching staff allowed just three hits in a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader sweep of Wisconsin Lutheran, winning 5-0, 2-1 at Ceniti Park in Verona on Tuesday.
Jenna Ryan (6-7) kicked off the stellar pitching with six shutout innings in game one, allowing just one hit while striking out seven Warriors (8-16, 5-9 NAC) and earning her sixth win of the season. And in game two, she recorded her first save of the season, facing the minimum over two more shutout innings. It was just the third career save for the senior who's not typically called on to close out games.
Helping earn Ryan that win in game was the offense from another senior, Jamie Kurt. Kurt finished the game 1-for-2 with four RBI. That one hit was a grand slam in the third inning, her first career grand slam and all the Eagles needed to take care of the Warriors in game one.
Game two witnessed great pitching from Brittany Andrews and Rachel Elliott (2-4) who each allowed just one hit in 2-plus innings apiece. Andrews gave up the lone run in the third inning which occurred on back-to-back doubles, the first charged to her and the second to Elliott. Ryan then closed it out.
The Eagles (10-12, 5-5 NAC) got their first run in the second inning on a sacrifice fly from Charlie Metcalf to score Alexandra Baltazar. The turning point in the game came in the bottom of the third. What looked to be an apparent inning-ending strikeout leaving runners on second and third for the Eagles was argued by Edgewood College Head Coach J.P. Richards after he heard a foul tip on the swing by Elliott. The umpires discussed and agreed that it indeed was a foul tip and it gave Elliott an extra life. She walked and that loaded the bases. A wild pitch from Wisconsin Lutheran's Laura Konop to the next batter followed and Emily Monson, who was on third base, then scampered home.
It was the decisive and game-winning run for Edgewood College who even its conference mark to 5-5. The Eagles will take on Aurora University tomorrow afternoon at home. First pitch was changed to 2:00 p.m. at Ceniti Park in Verona.
