FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Freshman forward Elaine Gerry had already had a warm welcome to college soccer, having scored six goals through the Eagles first five games. However, Gerry stamped her name as an offensive force on Wednesday night in Fond du Lac, scoring six goals to double her season total, and lead the Eagles to an 8-2 victory over Marian University.
After Marian (2-5, 0-2 NAC) took a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick in the sixth minute, Gerry scored her first goal of the night off assists from Janna Yost and Elyse Clouthier just short of the 12 minute mark. Gerry returned the favor five minutes later teaming with Laura Marx to set up Clouthier for a goal of her own.
The real fireworks began in the second half as Gerry rattled off four straight goals in a span of 10:24. Marx assisted on all four of Gerry's second half goals, giving her five assists for the night. Following another successful Marian penalty kick, Gerry finished her night with goal number six with 30 minutes still to play. Caitlin Moore fed Gerry for her final tally.
Kelsey Beck wrapped up the scoring for the Eagles in the 74th minute, assisted by Angela Colletti.
Edgewood College goalkeeper Ilana Bar-av stopped all nine shots from the field that she faced, allowing just the two scores from the penalty kick spot.
Gerry's double hat trick fell one goal short of the tying the all-time school record. Jennifer Brabant scored seven goals against Judson College on September 11, 1993. The last Edgewood College player to record six goals in a game was Amanda Rhyner on October 5, 2005 against Alverno College.
Marx, however, did etch her name into the record books, tying the school mark with five assists. She now shares the record with Trisha Rhodes who had five helpers at Lakeland College on October 10, 1998.
Edgewood College (5-1, 2-0 NAC) will return home for another Northern Athletics Conference match on Saturday when they host Concordia University Chicago. Game time is 11:00 a.m. at Breese Stevens Field.
