MADISON, Wis. – Edgewood College women's soccer team got off to a strong start and hung on through the second half in a season opening 2-0 victory over St. Norbert College at Breese Stevens Field. Elyse Clouthier tallied her first goal of the season and goalkeeper Ilana Bar-av made six saves to earn her first shutout.
Most fans hadn't even settled into their seats when Elyse Clouthier did what she does best and tallied her first goal of the new 2008 season. Just two minutes into their match against St. Norbert College, Elyse gathered a Laura Marx shot which had rebounded off Green Knight goalkeeper Mallory Ford and buried it in the back of the net.
19 minutes later the Eagles received a gift when a St. Norbert College defender, attempting to clear an Edgewood College (1-0) cross, kicked the ball into her own net for an own goal.
The Eagles controlled play through much of the first half, outshooting the Green Knights 8-3, but the tables turned in the second half. St. Norbert College (0-1) kept the pressure on through the last 45 minutes, but Bar-av was equal to the task, securing four saves to preserve the shutout.
Edgewood College will be home again on Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m. for a match with Maryville University (Mo.).
