Things not rosy in tournament opener

Jenna Ryan
AURORA, Ill. (May 1, 2008) – Marian pitcher Kristen Rose seems to have the Eagles figured out. Just over one week after pitching a one-hitter against Edgewood College the pitcher was back in the circle doing it again, allowing just three Eagle hits in the Sabres 7-1 win in the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament opener for both teams. Shortstop Jennifer Stephens had two of the Eagles three hits, scoring the team's lone run.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Marian's Maria Archie blasted a two-run home run to give the Sabres the 2-0 lead. The following inning Amanda Manteufel would hit a two-run shot to bring the score to 4-0 in favor of the Sabres. In the sixth Jennifer Stephens led off the inning with a single and would score the team's lone run, thanks to a Marian College fielding error. In the bottom of the sixth the Sabres would score three more runs and hold on for the 7-1 lead. Kristen Rose (12-6) picked up her second win of the season over the Eagles pitching a complete game, striking out eight and allowing no earned runs while Jenna Ryan (13-8) was saddled with the loss pitching six innings and allowing five earned runs. Jennifer Stephens was two-for-four at the plate while pitcher Jenna Ryan accounted for the team's only other hit.

Marian College improves to 26-13 overall and remains unbeaten versus the Eagles in 2008. The Sabres swept the regular season series in Madison, winning 2-0 in game one off a Kristen Rose one-hitter and used a seventh inning rally to take game two 6-5. With the loss the Eagles fall to 20-15 and are just one loss away from being eliminated from the tournament. Marian advances to face Benedictine tomorrow at 1 p.m. while the Eagles await the loser of the Aurora-Lakeland game. Gametime is slated for approximately 3 p.m.
