AURORA, Ill. (April 6, 2008) – Edgewood College was outscored 13-2 in their doubleheader against conference power Aurora, falling 8-0 in game one and 5-2 in the second game. The Eagles have now dropped four straight games since sweeping Rockford to open up conference play.
In game one the Spartans exploded in the fifth inning, scoring five runs en route to the 8-0 victory in six innings. Aurora held a 1-0 lead heading into the fifth inning. An Edgewood College fielding error kept the inning alive for the Spartans who exploited the mistake, scoring five unearned runs off of five hits. The Spartans would add two more runs in the sixth to end the game due to the eight-run rule. The Eagles offense was held to just four hits in the game. Anna Snyder (6-3) pitched six innings for the Spartans, striking out 10 batters to pick up the win.
Jenna Ryan (5-6) suffered her sixth loss of the season despite yielding only two earned runs in five innings of action.
Jennifer Stephens kept her hitting streak alive, hitting a triple, the team's only extra-base hit. Julie Beenes was a perfect three-for-three at the plate for Aurora, driving in three runs.
Aurora scored a run in each of the first three innings, picking up the 5-2 win to sweep the series.
Jamie Kurt hit a solo shot in the fourth inning to get the Eagles on the board while the Spartans would add two more runs in the top of the sixth to take a 5-1 lead. Edgewood College scored one-run in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough as the team dropped their fourth straight game. Nicole Capone (5-2) pitched six and one-third innings, striking out seven and picking up the win. Rachel Elliot (0-2) pitched five and one-third innings, absorbing her second loss of the season. Anna Snyder was credited with the save coming into the game with two runners on in the seventh. Snyder faced two batters, retiring both of them.
Jennifer Stephens was three-for-four at the plate, extending her hitting streak to 12 games. The Eagles managed just five hits in the game. Over the course of the series the Eagles were out-hit 22-9 and batted just .173.
With the losses, Edgewood College falls to 7-9 overall and 2-4 in Northern Athletics Conference play. The Spartans improve to 11-5 and a perfect 4-0 in conference action. The Eagles return home on Wednesday, April 9 for their first home doubleheader of the season, taking on MSOE at 4 p.m.
