SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (Apr. 18, 2008) – After getting rained-out three times Edgewood College finally took the diamond against Lakeland, rallying to win game one 5-3 before falling 16-6 in game two.
Jenna Ryan continued her streak of not allowing an earned run while
Jennifer Stephens saw her hitting streak come to a halt after 19 games. The Eagles committed a season-high 10 errors over the course of the series which led to 12 unearned runs.
In game one, Edgewood College rallied twice to take the 5-3 win to open the series. Lakeland scored two runs in the first inning to jump out to the early lead. The Eagles would rally to tie the game at two apiece in the fourth before the Muskies would regain the lead at 3-2 in the fifth. In the sixth the Eagles would mount another charge, scoring another pair of runs to take the lead. Edgewood College would add an insurance run in the seventh to bring the score to 5-3.
Colleen Joyce led the charge in both rallies, hitting leadoff singles in both innings. Joyce finished the game two-for-three at the plate while
Jennifer Stephens was two-for-four. Edgewood College won the game despite committing six errors with all three Muskie runs unearned.
Jenna Ryan (8-6) picked up the win, pitching all seven innings for the Eagles. Ryan has not allowed an earned run in her last six appearances in the circle, a streak spanning 31 innings. Lakeland's Sara Roberts (9-6) took the loss, pitching seven innings and allowing just two earned runs.
In game two, the Muskies scored 12 runs in two innings to earn the 16-6 win in five innings. The Eagles held a 3-2 lead after two before yielding six runs in the third and six in the fourth innings to dig a 14-6 hole.
Jennifer Stephens (2-3) took the loss, pitching three innings, allowing just one earned run while striking out four. Lakeland's Cassie Felton (1-4) picked up her first win of the season, pitching four innings and allowing three earned runs.
Jamie Kurt was the only Eagle finishing the game with multiple hits, going two-for-two at the plate.
Brittany Rynes had a team-high three RBIs for the Eagles. Kayla VandeWettering led the Muskie offensive barrage, hitting two doubles while going three-for-three at the plate with four RBIs. Stephens was unable to get a hit for the Eagles and has her hitting streak end at 19 games.
Friday's doubleheader was originally scheduled for March 26 before getting postponed to April 3 then April 11 and finally April 18. It was fitting the two teams split the series as both came into the doubleheader having won five of their last six games.
With the split, Edgewood College moves to 13-11 overall and 8-6 in conference while the Muskies move to 11-11 overall and 10-4 in Northern Athletics Conference action. The Eagles are in day two of their seven day stretch that includes 14 games. Edgewood College heads to Milwaukee tomorrow for a doubleheader versus Alverno. The Eagles step out of conference on Sunday for a series versus UW-Stevens Point before heading home where they will play their final 10 games of the regular season.
