MADISON, Wis. - Now that the Edgewood College women's basketball team has their feet back under them, the rest of the Northern Athletics Conference will need to take notice. The Eagles won their third straight game following a season opening four-game skid by dropping Benedictine University 82-62 at the Todd Wehr Edgedome.
Edgewood College used a 16-4 run in the first half to break an 11-all tie. Megan Scheele scored five points during the run including a three-point play. Brianna Droessler added a pair of buckets and Shae Beckwith made the second of her three first half three-pointers to forge a 27-15 lead. Benedictine trimmed the lead to six points with 2:19 to play in the half, but Edgewood College scored six of the last seven points for a 42-31 intermission lead.
In the second half, Edgewood College (3-4, 3-1 NAC) burst from the gate with a 19-2 run sparked by an acrobatic Droessler three-point play and three field goals by Susan Paskey for a 63-39 lead with 10:50 left in the game. Edgewood College and Benedictine University would trade baskets through the remainder of the game, before finally settling on the 20-point margin.
Scheele led all scorers with 23 points, giving her an even 1,700 in her career. She now trails Deb Boomsma's all time school scoring record by 154 points. Droessler had her second double-double of the season with 13 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Beckwith nailed three three-pointers to finish with 15 points and freshman Ashley Averkamp reached double figures for the first time in her career with 10 points. Sophomore point guard Amber Hemp had eight assists and eight rebounds. Edgewood College shot 45.2 percent from the field and dominated the boards with a 51-37 rebounding edge.
Benedictine University (3-6, 1-3 NAC) was led by Laketa Simpson who scored 12 of her 18 points in the second half. Monika Krozel notched a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Edgewood College will take the next week off for final exams, before facing Lakeland College on Monday, December 22 at 7:00 p.m. The Eagles then play 13th-ranked UW-Stevens Point on December 30 before departing to the Great Goombay Shootout in the Bahamas the first weekend of the new year.
