MADISON, Wis. – As anxious as Edgewood College was to finally be able to play its home opener, they were just as anxious to get Concordia University Wisconsin out the door. The Falcons opened the conference season with an 80-54 win in front of nearly 300 fans at the Todd Wehr Edgedome on Saturday afternoon.
Concordia Wisconsin's Krista Mayyou had a game to remember as she poured in 36 points on 13-for-17 shooting and 5-for-6 from three-point range in just 22 minutes in the win. The senior had 23 points at halftime giving the Falcons (1-2, 1-0 NAC) a comfortable 20-point lead at the break.
Edgewood College (0-4, 0-1 NAC), on the other hand, had about just as much luck offensively as they had in trying to guard the hot hand of Mayyou. The Eagles shot just 34 percent (17-for-50) and were only 4-for-23 in the first half. They were 0-for-6 from beyond the three-point arc and committed 29 costly turnovers on the afternoon resulting in 30 Falcon points.
From the tip-off it seemed as if it was going to be a one person show with Mayyou scoring 12 of CUW's first 15 points before the Eagles could get their first point. Finally, at the 15:37 mark, Megan Scheele was able to get the home team on the board with jumper from the wing. Scheele finished with a team-high 22 points on 6-for-13 from the field while going 10-for-10 from the free throw line.
After a Shae Beckwith free throw to make the score 15-3, the Falcons made another big run until the score showed 23-3 less than eight minutes into the game. CUW would roll to a 38-18 advantage at the midway point and pushed the lead to as much as 30 points late in the second half.
Janelle Gosh and Ashley Averkamp scored eight points apiece in the loss. Gosh added a team-high five rebounds and three blocks as well. Hannah Schultz, Kacy Sporle, and Scheele also grabbed a team-high five boards as the Eagles out-rebounded the Falcons 38-31.
Edgewood College will look to break the season long losing streak and get in the win column as they take to the road for a trio of NAC contests. They'll face Marian and Aurora next week beginning with a Wednesday night game in Fond du Lac, Wis. The Eagles will then travel to Maranatha Baptist on December 8 before coming home to play the first game of a double header against Benedictine on December 13.
