VERONA, Wis. – With the end of the conference season nearing an end, the Edgewood College softball team was looking to climb the NACC standings but could only take one of two against Alverno College. The Eagles' improved their extra-inning record to 3-0 with an 8-inning 4-3 win in the opener before dropping a 6-5 decision to the Inferno on Senior Day.

No Edgewood College batter has been hotter than Katie Landon and she continued her streak on Saturday. The junior belted her first-career home run in the third inning to put the Eagles on the board first. Alverno responded with an unearned run in the fourth inning and took their first lead with two more in the fifth. Down 3-2, Carlene DeCoster started a rally with a single in the fifth. After a stolen base, Landon singled her over to third and a batter later, Alyssa Schulting tied the ball game with an infield single. The Eagles had runners at second and third with one out, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the inning.

Karlie Klossner was brilliant on the rubber, allowing just one earned run in six innings. The sophomore struck out a career-high nine in the outing. In the eighth, Dylan Bahrke led off with a single. Taylor McLean sacrificed two runners to second and third with just one out. Alexis Unser came to the plate and hit a ground ball to the pitcher which looked like an easy out, but the throw sailed over the first baseman's head and Bahrke scored the game-winning run. DeJongh earned the win, tossing two hitless innings in relief while striking out one.

In game two, Alverno cashed in two quick runs in the first. The Eagles responded with one run in the first three frames, but the Inferno pulled back ahead 5-3 with a pair in the fourth. One more in the fifth gave Alverno a three-run advantage, but Landon sparked another rally. In the fifth, the junior led off with a double and two batters later, Jackie Diesch crushed her first dinger of the season to pull the Eagles within a run.

Edgewood College tried for another comeback in the seventh as Schulting singled with one out. Diesch reached on an error and Tiffani Pierced walked to load the bases but a pop out did the Eagles in and they fell 6-5. DeJongh tossed four innings while striking out three and Klossner allowed just two hits in three innings of relief.

Landon was nearly perfect at the plate, going 6-for-7 on the day with three runs batted in. The junior improved her average to a team-leading .347. Bahrke and Kylie Clark each went 4-for-8 in the two games while DeCoster and Schulting earned three hits each.

The Eagles will return to the field after Easter as they head to Fond du Lac for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader on Monday. Live stats and video will be provided against Marian University.
