Box Score 2 LISLE, Ill. – The Edgewood College baseball team had a golden opportunity to move as high as second place in the NACC, but couldn't take advantage of it, losing a pair of games to Benedictine University. Benedictine walked off with a 4-3 victory in the bottom of the ninth inning of game one, and then downed Edgewood College 7-2 in the second game.
Edgewood College (11-19, 6-6 NACC) trailed 2-0 in the first game, when Brad Clark struck gold in the third inning. Clark tripled down the right field line, scoring Andrew Lauritzen and Danny Appino to tie the game. Two batters later, Sean Thompson singled up the middle to score Clark for a 3-2 Edgewood College lead. However, Benedictine tied the game in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Ryan Mullin, and then won the game in the bottom of the ninth on another two-out, RBI single by Mullin.
Trevor Koehn went the distance for the Eagles striking out four batters and giving up four earned runs on 11 hits. Creekmore led Edgewood College going 2-for-4 at the plate. Clark was 1-for-4 with his two-run triple.
Edgewood College struggled to get the bats going in game two against Benedictine University (15-11, 10-2 NACC) starter Mike Irgang. Irgang held the Eagles to just two hits through the first six innings while his Benedictine teammates built a 3-0 lead. In the seventh inning, Edgewood College got on the board when Ryan O'Dell hit a one out double, and pinch runner Brodie Engel eventually scored on an RBI double by Marc Ostrowski.
However Benedictine broke the game open in the seventh inning scoring four runs on four hits. Edgewood College added one more run in the ninth on an RBI single by Nick Lehner, but it wasn't enough to salvage a split.
Ostrowski was the only Eagle with two hits, going 2-for-4 with one run batted in. Lauritzen had a hit in each game extending his hitting streak to nine games. Nate Averill was saddled with the loss, pitching 5.1 innings and giving up three earned runs.
The two losses slipped the Eagles down to fifth in the NACC, but with another chance to gain ground on Monday. Edgewood College will host Wisconsin Lutheran College at Stampfl Field. The Warriors are currently tied for third place in the league with a 6-4 record.
