Box Score 2 MARQUETTE, Mich. – With four games in two days, the Edgewood College softball was looking to kick off the season on a high note, but could not pull out a win. The Eagles fell in their season opener 7-0 to UW-Superior before dropping a 4-3 contest to host Finlandia University.
Edgewood College struggled to get any offense going against the Yellowjackets. Rachel DeJongh sat down UW-Superior in the first inning but the Yellowjackets (1-0) rattled the sophomore pitcher for three hits and four runs in the second. Already with a 5-0 cushion in the sixth, UW-Superior tacked on two more runs with a pair of hits. In the bottom half of the inning, the Eagles (0-2) finally collected their first hit when freshman Kyle Clark reached on a leadoff single. Back-to-back singles by Alyssa Schulting and Dylan Bahrke provided Edgewood College with their best opportunity at scoring in the seventh, but two groundouts put the Eagles away for good.
In the second game of the day, Edgewood College found the offensive spark that they could not in the morning. Jackie Diesch singled with two outs in the first and Schulting bombed a home run to pull the Eagles ahead 2-0. Sophomore pitcher Karlie Klossner got in a jam in the second as Finlandia banged out two hits, but Schulting fielded a ground ball and stepped on first to end the threat. The Lions picked up two runs in the third on just one hit and a pair of Eagle errors but Edgewood College regained the lead in the fifth after Diesch scored on a Finlandia (2-1) error. The Lions tied it again in their half of the inning and pulled ahead 4-3 in the sixth on a two-out double. Diesch ripped a two-out single in the seventh and then stole second, but was stranded and the Eagles fell by a run.
Schulting led Edgewood College at the plate, going 3-for-6 on the day with a home run and two runs batted in. Diesch put together a strong effort in game two, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. In her first outing of the year, Klossner pitched 4.1 innings in a no decision against Finlandia. The sophomore gave up five hits and no earned runs while striking out a pair.
Edgewood College will be back in the dome tomorrow for a pair of games against Mount Mary University and Carroll University. Live video will be provided with a link on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
