JANESVILLE, Wis. – It is always a good feeling to kick off the season on the right foot, and the Edgewood College men's golf team did just that this past weekend. After round one of the Culver's Edgewood College Fall Classic, the Eagles were right in the middle of the pack, but showed determination on day two to fire a 294 and tie for fourth place out of 15 teams in the home event.
Mother nature did not cooperate with the field on day one of the tournament and rain forced about 40 golfers to postpone part of their round to Saturday. Those golfers came out early to finish round one and by 10:00 a.m. the rest of the field began round two. The Eagles' Red team fired a 313 in round one behind senior Kenny Rucker's four-over par 75. Newcomer Kyle Bruce and Patrick Boher followed with scores of 78 and 79, respectively. Patrick Cahill rounded out the top four with an 81 to put Edgewood College at eighth heading into round two.
It seemed as though the Eagles just needed to shake off the early season jitters as Edgewood College buckled down to turn in the second lowest 18-hole team score in school history with a 294. Cahill posted the third best round by any Eagle in school history with a three-under par 68 to pace Edgewood College in round two. Bruce came in with a one-over 72 while Michael Mathwick carded a 76. Rucker rounded out the scoring with a 78 to help catapult the Eagles up the leaderboard to a tie with UW-Stout for fourth place. Edgewood College's second round of 294 was the second best by any school in the tournament behind only the University of Dubuque's 288.
Cahill finished tied for eighth (149) out of 90 total golfers while Bruce came in just a shot behind him to tie for 11th. Mitchell Feller and Tony Thaden led Edgewood College's black team as they both fired a two day score of 161 to tie for 44th.
Viterbo University and the University of Dubuque tied with a two-day total of 598, but Viterbo won the tiebreaker to take the team title. Dubuque's Mitchell Sobotta fired a two-under par 140 to earn individual medalist.
The Eagles will head to Wisconsin Dells next weekend for the Division III Central Regional Invitational. The two day event will take place at Trappers Turn Golf Club and will start on Sunday, September 8.
