Forest Park, Ill. – So far in conference play, no one has been able to keep Edgewood College's bats quiet. The Eagles had two quality starts of their own but Edgewood College ran into a pitcher on a hot streak as they were shutout by Northern Athletics Conference leader Dominican University 2-0 and 4-0 in Sunday's doubleheader.
Rachel DeJongh and the Stars' Emily Mahoney were locked in a pitchers' duel for the majority of the game, but in the bottom of the second inning, Dominican (16-6, 8-0 NAC) took advantage of an Eagles' error. After two groundouts, DeJongh surrendered a single to the Stars' Allie Evans. Evans advanced to second on a wild pitch then proceeded to score on an error. The next batter then ripped a double before DeJongh struck out Domincan's Sarah Slouber to end the inning with two unearned runs.
The rest of the game, DeJongh was clean in the circle as she scattered four hits across the remaining four innings. Meanwhile, at the plate, Edgewood College (5-17, 3-3 NAC) was not able to solve Mahoney as the senior struck out 15 Eagle batters. Dylan Bahrke and Jessica Spitzer each tallied a hit in back-to-back innings, but no one else could get a base knock and the Eagles fell 2-0.
In game two, Dominican kept Mahoney on the rubber and she picked up right where she left off, striking out 10 batters. Edgewood College striped seven hits off the ace, but no more than one per inning. Edgewood College starter Karlie Klossner kept the Stars scoreless until the fourth inning when Dominican rallied for two runs on two hits.
In the sixth, with Charlie Leikness on the mound, Dominican again ripped two hits to score two runs, but this time both were unearned. The Eagles began to push in the seventh as Tiffani Pierce walked and was moved over after DeJongh ripped a single to left field. Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch, but failed to score as Jackie Diesch flew out to center field.
Alyssa Schulting was 3-for-3 from the plate while DeCoster and DeJongh added two hits apiece to combine for all seven of Edgewood College's base knocks.
The Eagles will finally be able to play on their home diamond on Tuesday as they take on Lakeland College in a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader. Live stats and live video will be provided with links available on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
