AURORA, Ill. – The Edgewood College men's golf team entered the weekend with a razor thin advantage, but left with a deficit nearly as slim, and the result was a painful defeat. At the Northern Athletics Conference Championship, the Eagles surrendered their one shot lead after round one, and then nearly came back from nine strokes back, but ultimately fell to MSOE by three shots. The second place finish denied the Eagles a second consecutive trip NAC title and another trip to the NCAA Division III Championships.
With three rounds to play this weekend, Edgewood College entered with a one shot lead over MSOE from last fall's first round played at Whistling Straits in Haven, Wis. The second round was postponed by weather last October, setting up a three round race for the title at Stonebridge Country Club.
However, Edgewood College stumbled in Sunday's second round shooting a team score of 325, while the Raiders fired a 315 to take a nine-stroke advantage into Monday's 36-hole final day. In Monday morning's third round, Edgewood College shot what was then the best round of the tournament with a 304. With MSOE shooting 312, the Eagles were back within one stroke in a winner-take-all final round on Monday afternoon.
The Eagles barely gave an inch shooting 305 in the fourth round, but MSOE pulled out the best round of the weekend when they needed it most, firing a 303 to claim the NAC Championship and the NCAA Division III Tournament berth that goes with it. MSOE finished with a four round total of 1,243, edging Edgewood College's 1, 246 by just three strokes.
Edgewood College received fantastic play from their two top five finishers Kenny Rucker and Patrick Bohrer. Rucker shot a 75 in the third round to start the comeback and finished third overall with a score of 18-over par 306. Bohrer was lights out on Monday, shooting a pair of 74s to finish in fifth at 307. Both Rucker and Bohrer were named first team all-conference by virtue of their finishes.
Michael Mathwick also turned in a 74 in the fourth round and placed 12th with a four round total of 325. Tyler Cobb placed 25th with a score of 335. Patrick Cahill didn't play the first round last fall, but put together too rounds in the 70s on Monday with a 75 and a 78.
Edgewood College will conclude their season in two weeks, when they host the Edgewood College Spring Quadrangular featuring MSOE, UW-Eau Claire and UW-Stout.
