VERONA, Wis. – Yet again the Edgewood College softball team was forced to postpone another softball game, but on Monday, the Eagles got a chance to beat the rain and defend their home turf. Edgewood College belted out 15 hits including two home runs in a 12-4 victory over Lakeland College before having to suspend game two due to a rainstorm.
Lakeland College (8-14, 4-5 NAC) jumped on Edgewood College starter Rachel DeJongh early for three runs on two hits in the top of the first, but the Eagles roared back. Carlene DeCoster led off with a single to short left field, and scored after DeJongh reached on an error by the Muskies' third baseman. Jessica Spitzer then tied the game with a deep shot to left field for her fourth home run of the season. The rally did not stop there as Katie Landon, Alyssa Shulting, and Dylan Bahrke hit consecutive singles, scoring one more run.
After the Muskies tied the game in the top of the second, the Eagles poured on three more runs with four hits in the bottom half of the inning. DeJongh heated up as she only allowed two more hits all game and struck out five Lakeland batters in the last three innings. Meanwhile, the Eagles continued to rack up runs. After an empty third, Diesch singled to kick off the fourth inning. Landon walked and Schulting loaded the bases with a single. Bahrke then stepped to the plate and took the Muskies' Alyssa Ciepley deep to left field for her first career grand slam, giving Edgewood College a 11-4 advantage.
With rain falling, the Eagles (6-17, 4-3 NAC) needed one more run in the fifth to send Lakeland packing. DeJongh reached on an error then advanced to second on a passed ball. Landon moved her over to third with a single and Schulting clinched the win with her fourth hit of the day to score DeJongh.
Schulting finished 4-for-4 from the plate while Bahrke, DeCoster, Diesch, and Landon all picked up a pair of hits. DeJongh racked up a career high 10 strikeouts in five innings of work while giving up three earned runs.
Game two of the doubleheader was scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m., but mother nature had other plans as a downpour forced the teams off the field. No makeup date has been determined for the second game between Lakeland College and Edgewood College.
The Eagles are scheduled to host Maranatha Baptist Tuesday afternoon. Live stats and live video will be provided for the 2:00 p.m. start. Links can be found on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
