TUCSON, Ariz.-  After just one day of practice outside the Edgewood College softball team took to the diamond for a pair of tough non-conference games. In the first game against Baldwin Wallace University, the Eagles plated the first run, but ultimately fell 8-5. Edgewood College then outhit Dickinson in the afternoon game, but couldn't bring runs in and lost 4-2.

The Eagles jumped on top of the Yellowjackets early as Katie Landon poked a single up the middle to bring in Carlene DeCoster in the bottom of the first inning. After a scoreless second, Edgewood College (2-6) ran into some trouble in the top half of the third. After Charlie Leikness walked the first two batters of the inning, Baldwin Wallace's Lauren Feciuch made her pay with a three-run homer. The Yellowjackets (2-0) tacked on five runs on six hits in the fourth and Edgewood College was quickly down 8-1 before a comeback started to mount.

With one out, Rachel DeJongh roped a double and was brought in by Spitzer who tripled off the fence. Jackie Diesch then grounded out to shortstop but not before Spitzer scored. Landon then reached on an error which was followed by Dylan Bahrke's triple and the two scored after an error by the second baseman. The rally was then halted after a pitching change but not before the Eagles closed the gap and brought themselves within three. Freshman pitcher Karlie Klossner came in relief and only allowed two hits in 3.1 innings but Edgewood College could not rally for any more runs and fell 8-5.

DeJongh earned the start in the second game and mowed through the Dickinson lineup in the first two innings before the Red Devils (1-3) tallied three runs on four hits and an Eagle error. Edgewood College then got one back in the top of the fourth as Alyssa Schulting plated Landon with a single.

After the three-run third, DeJongh did not allow another hit the rest of the game, but a dropped third strike led to a run for Dickinson in the sixth. With the game on the line, the Eagles needed a comeback in seventh for any hope at getting their first win in Arizona. After the first two batters reached, the top of the order came up. DeCoster grounded out, but advanced the runners. DeJongh followed and reached on an error which brought in Leikness. With just one out and runners at the corners, Spitzer came to the plate. The senior pushed the count to 2-2 but then grounded into a fielder's choice which was then followed by a Diesch groundout to end Edgewood College's chance at a victory.

Spitzer and DeCoster both poked three hits on the day while Spitzer was a home run shy of the cycle in the first game. Five different players brought in a run while DeJongh, Diesch, Landon, and Pierce all ripped a pair of base hits. Klossner was very efficient in the circle only allowing two hits and an unearned run in 3.1 innings.

Edgewood College will look for their first win of the spring trip as they face Texas Lutheran and Alfred University tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 am PT. Live stats will be available on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
