MADISON, Wis. - It took more than three weeks to finish the match, but the Edgewood College volleyball team's made it worth the wait. The Eagles downed the University of Dubuque 25-17, 18-25, 25-14, 25-13 in a match completed Wednesday night after a power failure at the Todd Wehr Edgedome forced the match to be suspended back on September 4.
Beginning the night with a 20-15 first set led, the Eagles quickly finished off the opening set. Lindsey Swansby and Sarah Schuchhardt teamed up for an assisted block on the set's final point. The University of Dubuque (9-9) pounced on Edgewood College in the second set. Leading 5-4, the Spartans' Caitlin Simbeck served off three straight points for an 8-4 lead. The Eagles got back as close as 10-9 on a kills from Jennifer Martin, but the Spartans pulled away with a 7-2 run to regain control and ultimately win the set.
Dropping the second set may have awakened a beast in Edgewood College (13-4). The Eagles opened up a quick 7-2 lead on three kills by Mallory Palmer and one from Jennifer Lenz. The Eagles led 10-6 when Rachel Thomsen scored back-to-back service aces to spark a 7-1 run and the Eagles never looked back again. Rachel Tesch also added a pair of aces herself during that run. Palmer banged out eight of her match-high 20 kills in the third set.
Edgewood College maintained the momentum into the fourth set, scoring the first five points behind kills from Palmer, Kaitlyn Rabel and another service ace by Tesch. The lead ballooned as high as 21-10 as the University of Dubuque hit -.115 in the final set of the match.
After Palmer's 20 kills, Schuchhardt had another solid night from her middle hitter position, with 10 kills and five blocks, including one solo effort. Swansby handed out 44 assists and had four kills on only six attempts, while Sam Himmelspach led the team with 16 digs. The Eagles hit .252 for the match and delivered 11 service aces.
Amy Tranel and Klaudia Basierak led the University of Dubuque with eight kills apiece. Basierak also had a team-high 16 digs, but the Spartans hit only .081 for the match.
Edgewood College now heads into a Friday night showdown at defending Northern Athletics Conference regular season champion Dominican University with a six-match winning streak. The Eagles beat the Stars last year in an epic five-set NAC Tournament title game in River Forest.
