VERONA, Wis. – After being rained out on Saturday, the Edgewood College softball team go off to a slow start on Sunday. The Eagles fell behind Concordia University Chicago early and dropped game one 8-2 before responding in game two. Edgewood College scored five runs in the fifth inning to end an 8-0 victory and give head coach
J.P. Richards his 200th career victory.
The Cougars' first two batters of the game reached on errors and later came in to score, giving Concordia Chicago an early 2-0 lead. Their offense kept rolling in the second inning as pitcher Sami DeFord led off the inning with a home run. The Cougars then got a pair of run scoring singles to put them ahead 5-0 after just two innings.
Edgewood College got on the board in the fourth inning as
Katie Landon scored on a throwing error to pull the Eagles within four. However, the Eagles left two runners on base in the inning. The Eagles scored another run in the sixth, but it wasn't enough as the Cougars scored one run in each of the final three innings.
DeFord earned the win for the Cougars (13-25, 10-12 NAC) as she tossed a complete game, only giving up two runs on five hits while striking out five.
Charlie Leikness took the loss for the Eagles as she gave up seven runs, only four earned on seven hits.
Carlene DeCoster went 2-for-3 from the plate and scored one run to lead the Eagle offense.
Leikeness sparked the Eagle offense in the third inning of game two when she drew a walk.
Emily Monson followed with a single, and after an out
Jessica Spitzer drove in two runs with a double to left center. After a Cougar pitching change, Spitzer came in to score on a wild pitch and put the Eagles up 3-0.
The Eagles (13-23, 6-16 NAC) went down in order in the fourth, but they erupted in the fifth. Monson started a rally with a walk and later scored on a Spitzer single. DeCoster then ripped a single through the left side to load the bases before Landon singled to score
Kayla Rackow.
Alyssa Schulting followed with a single that scored Spitzer, and DeCoster scored on a
Paityn Albers pinch-hit single to put the Eagles up 7-0.
Tiffani Pierce ended the game when she placed a single down the left field line to score Landon and give the Eagles the 8-0 win due to the mercy rule.
The victory gave Richards his 200th career win. He is Edgewood College's all-time leader in wins and became the first coach in program history to reach the 200 win plateau.
Spitzer and DeCoster led the Eagle offense, going 2-for-3 each. DeCoster scored one run while Spitzer drove in three and score two more. The top three hitters in the Eagle lineup all scored two runs in the win. Leikness earned the win as she tossed two hitless innings in relief.
Brittany Andrews started the game and gave up two hits in three innings of work while striking out one.
The Eagles will end their season tomorrow when they host Rockford College at Ceniti Park. Edgewood College will provide live video and live stats for the 2:00 p.m. start. Both links can be found on
