MILWAUKEE, Wis. – In a doubleheader that took more than one week to play due to weather, the Edgewood College softball team took a sweep from Wisconsin Lutheran College. The Eagle offense broke out after being held down last weekend scoring 10 runs in their 10-0 game one win before taking the nightcap 8-7.

After both teams went down in order in the first inning of game one, the Eagle offense took the lead in the second inning. Katie Landon and Alyssa Schulting both reached on infield singles before Kayla Rackow singled to left field to load the bases. Paityn Albers then ripped a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Landon to put the Eagles ahead 1-0.

Edgewood College's offense erupted in the third inning as Carlene DeCoster started a two out rally with a single to center field. With runners on second and third, Schulting came through with a single to center to score DeCoster before Rackow was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Albers drew walk to score a run and Schulting came in to score on wild pitch. Jessica Diaz capped the five-run inning with a single to center field that scored Albers.

Picher Charlie Leikness used that run support as she began to settle in in the third inning. The Oregon native only allowed one base runner in the first four innings, walking a batter in the first. The Warriors finally got a hit off Leikness with one out in the fifth inning. Leikness gave up one more hit in the sixth inning along with a walk to complete the two-hit shutout. She also struck out two in her fifth win of the season.

The Eagle offense put the game out of reach with four more runs in the sixth inning. Emily Monson reached on an error to start the inning and Alexis Unser followed with a run scoring double. Jessica Spitzer drove in Unser with a triple and later scored on a DeCoster single. DeCoster later scored on a wild pitch to cap the scoring and give the Eagles a 10-0 lead.

Schulting paced the Eagle offense, going 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring one run and driving in another. DeCoster went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and drove in another run while Albers led the team with two runs batted in.

Wisconsin Lutheran (11-21, 5-13 NAC) jumped ahead early in game two as they scored in each of the first four innings. After scoring single runs in each of the two innings, the Warriors plated two runs in the third inning to take a 4-1 lead. However, the Eagles answered and cut the deficit back to one with two runs of their own in the top of the fourth.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Warriors scored a pair of two out runs to push their lead to 6-3. Spitzer cut into that lead as she drove in Monson, who walked to start the inning, with a sacrifice fly and the Eagle deficit was just two runs.

Pitching in relief, Leikness worked around a pair of errors in the fifth inning to keep the Eagle deficit at 6-4. Edgewood College's offense responded in the sixth, taking the lead with four runs on two hits. Monson came up with the clutch hit, a bases loaded double that scored three and put the Eagles (12-20, 5-13 NAC) ahead for the first time in the game. Unser tacked on an important insurance run with single to center field that scored Monson, and the Eagles lead 8-6.

Wisconsin Lutheran scored one run in the sixth inning, but Leikness sat the Warriors down in order in the seventh to preserve her second win of the day and give the Eagles the sweep with the 8-7 victory.

Leikness pitched four innings in relief and gave up three runs on two hits to earn the win. Monson recorded two of the Eagles' five hits, going 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and two runs scored from the leadoff spot.

The Eagles will be in action again on Wednesday when they host Marian University at Ceniti Park in Verona. Edgewood College will provide live video and live stats for the 3:00 p.m. start. Both links can be found on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
