MILWAUKEE, Wis. – After a two week break, the Edgewood College softball team opened Northern Athletics Conference play at Alverno College on Saturday. The Eagles rallied to take a lead in game one, but the Inferno came right back to take the game 5-2. The Eagles came back and tied game two  before the Inferno hit back-to-back-to-back home runs to regain the lead and take the sweep 4-1.

Alverno pitcher Erin Dulek sat down the Eagles in order in the top of the first before the Inferno got on the board in the bottom of the inning. With runners on second and third, Chelsea Gulbronson ripped a single up the middle to put the Inferno up 1-0 after one inning.

Edgewood College threated to score in the third inning, but left runners on first and second. The Eagles finally broke through in the fourth inning as Jessica Spitzer started the inning with her sixth home run of the season. Kayla Rackow followed with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Rackow later scored on a throwing error to put the Eagles up 2-1.

However, the lead was short lived as the Inferno (5-7, 2-2 NAC) plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth. After a walk, Kim Gemmel crushed a home run to put the Inferno back ahead, 3-2 after four innings. Alverno tacked on a couple insurance runs in the fifth on sacrifice flies by Gulbronson and Roxanne Kresmer, extending their lead to 5-2.

The Eagles (7-9, 0-2 NAC) threatened to comeback in the sixth inning, but stranded runners on second and third. Dulek sat the Eagles down in order in the seventh to give Alverno the win.

Spitzer went 2-for-3 to lead the Eagle offense while Charlie Leikness tossed all six innings in the circle.

With game two scoreless, it looked like the Eagles would grab the lead in the second inning as Katie Landon started a two-out rally with a single down the left field line. Paityn Albers followed with a single through the right side and Tiffany Pierce walked to load the bases. However, Inferno pitcher Megan Rossi got out of the jam as she induced a pop out to end the threat. The Eagles threatened again in the third, but left runners on the corners.

Lauren Collete started the Inferno half of the third inning with a single and advanced to second on a fielder's choice. Collete scored on an Ashleigh Sagat single to put the Inferno up 1-0 after three.

Edgewood College was quick to answer, however as Landon opened the fourth inning with a single. Albers sacrificed her to second and Emily Monson ripped a two-out double to left center to even the score at one apiece.

The Inferno broke the game open in the fifth inning when Bre Hart, Sagat and Stef Wilmore hit back-to-back-to-back home runs to put Alverno ahead 4-1 after five.

The Eagles tried to comeback in both the sixth and seventh innings, but couldn't plate any runs, stranding two runners in each inning as Alverno took the game 4-1.

Landon went a perfect 3-for-3 and scored the only Eagle run to lead the offense while Carlene DeCoster and Monson each went 2-for-4.

The Eagles will try and rebound tomorrow as they open their home schedule against Dominican University. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 12:00 pm at Ceniti Park in Verona. Edgewood College will provide live video and live statistics for both contests. The links can be found on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
