TUCSON, Ariz. – Day three of the Edgewood College softball team's spring break trip didn't start as the Eagles would have liked, but they rebounded to earn a split. Dickinson College put up a three spot in the top of the first inning before the Eagles came back to take game one 6-3 over the Red Devils. In the nightcap the Eagles faced Denison University and lost another highly contested contest 2-1.

Dickinson's Bruke Mikesell led off the game with single and after an out, Carly Jordan also singled to put two runners on base. The Red Devils (2-6) plated one run before Melissa Osborn ripped a two-run double down the left field line to extend the lead to 3-0.

Edgewood College threatened in each of the first and second innings as they stranded two runners in the first and left the bases loaded in the second, but couldn't plate a run. The Eagle offense finally broke through in the fourth inning as Chandler Gloudeman reached on an error to start the inning and Tiffani Pierce followed with a walk. Katie Landon reached on an error to load the bases and after an out, Emily Monson drew a bases loaded walk to get the Eagles on the board. Jessica Spitzer then tied the game with a ringing single off the left field fence.

The Eagle offense stuck again in the sixth inning as Landon drew a leadoff walk and Alexis Unser dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move Landon to second. Back-to-back fielder's choices loaded the bases before Spitzer came up big again. She laced a single down the left field line to score two and give the Eagles a two run advantage. Kayla Rackow tacked on an insurance run when she crushed a double down the left field line to score Jessica Diaz.

The Red Devils attempted to come back in the seventh inning as they loaded the bases with one out before Charlie Leikness buckled down. After a strike out, she induced a ground out to end the game and give the Eagles the 6-3 victory.

Spitzer went 4-for-4 with four runs batted in for the Eagles while Leikness tossed five scoreless innings in relief to earn her fourth win of the season.

In the nightcap, Denison (5-1) got on the board early as they tallied a run in the top of the first inning. Following a strike out, Rachel Laughlin stole second and Kait Fiore came in to score from third to put the Big Red on top. The Big Red stretched their lead to 2-0 when Laughlin singled to right center to score Fiore in the third inning.

After being held to just one hit through five innings, the Eagles (5-5) tried to tie the game in the sixth. Pierce led off the inning with a walk and after a failed sacrifice bunt, Diaz ripped a single to put runners on first and second. Spitzer stayed hot as she crushed a double down the left field line to score Pierce and put runners on second and third with one out. Rackow drew a walk to load the bases but Kelsey Hager, the Denison pitcher, slammed the door with a strike out and a pop out to escape the jam.

Hager sat down the Eagles in order in the seventh to give the Big Red their second win over the Eagles in as many days.

Spitzer, Diaz and DeCoster all recorded a hit for the Eagles and Leikness only gave up six hits and took the loss.

Edgewood College will be in action again tomorrow as they face 15th ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges at 11:00 a.m. and Division II McKendree University at 1:30 p.m. Arizona Time. Edgewood College will provide live stats for both games and the links can be found on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
