MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Edgewood College capped a very successful season opening weekend with a pair of victories at the Finlandia University Dome Tournament. Jessica Spitzer blasted two home runs in the Eagles' 9-7 victory over Simpson College early Saturday morning. The Eagles followed that with a 6-4 win over Mount Mary College to end the weekend with a 3-1 record.

Simpson College (0-2) started the first game with run in the top of the first to take a quick 1-0 lead before the Eagles answered in the bottom half of the inning. Monson started the inning with a single, and after an out Spitzer crushed a home run to put the Eagles up 2-1. The Storm took a 4-2 lead with two runs in the second, on a two-run home run, and a single run in the third inning.

However, the Edgewood College offense woke back up in the third inning. Jessica Diaz led off the inning with single and Spitzer followed with another home run to tie the game at 4-4. Carlene DeCoster restarted the rally with a single before Kayla Rackow stayed hot with a home run, giving the Eagles a 6-4 lead after three innings.

The Storm came right back, however as Kacee Arey ripped a two-run home to tie the contest at 6-6 before the Eagles gained separation. Monson got hit by a pitch before Diaz singled and Spitzer drew a walk. After an out, Rackow gave the Eagles the lead for good with a two-run double. Chandler Gloudeman then gave the Eagles a 9-6 lead with a squeeze that scored Spitzer.

Pitcher Charlie Leikness stranded the bases full Simpson players in the fifth inning before the Storm got a run back in the sixth. Leikness then sat down the Storm in order in the seventh inning to earn her second win of the season.

Spitzer paced the Eagle offense, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three runs batted in. Rackow drove in a game-high four runs while going 2-for-4 with one run scored.

In the second game, Mount Mary (0-1) came out swinging as they took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. Edgewood College (3-1) finally got on the board with three runs in the third inning. Diaz started a two-out rally with single and Alexis Unser followed with a single. After Diaz scored on an error, Spitzer blasted a home run to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead. However, the Blue Angels came back with a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead.

Mount Mary's lead was short lived, however as the Eagles plated two runs in the fourth inning. Rackow started the inning with a triple and Alyssa Schulting crushed her first career home run, giving the Eagles a 5-4 lead after four innings.

Edgewood College tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning before Leikness stranded the tying runs in the seventh inning to give the Eagles the 6-4 win.
