PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The Edgewood College volleyball team hadn't been swept in 44 days and 20 matches, but that streak ended at the Williams Fieldhouse Wednesday night. The Eagles pushed two of the three sets against UW-Platteville beyond the required 25 points, but ultimately fell to the Pioneers 29-27, 25-17, 26-24 in the Eagles' regular season finale.
Edgewood College (24-8) had a chance to serve to win the first set at 24-23, but the Pioneers scored the point to even the score. The Eagles scored kills from Sarah Schuchhardt and Jessica Martin to fight off two of the first three set points for the Pioneers, but UW-Platteville's Samantha Rampart scored a kill to win the set for the Pioneers.
UW-Platteville (21-10) rolled out to a 20-10 lead and never looked back in the second set. In the third set, the Eagles blew out to a 14-5 lead behind five kills, a solo block from Mallory Palmer and an assisted block from Katie Wedvick and Lindsey Swansby. The Eagles still led 21-15, when the Pioneers began to reel the Eagles in. UW-Platteville scored five straight points to take a 23-21 lead, and ended the match with a 26-24 third set victory.
Palmer led the Eagles in two categories with nine kills and 14 digs. Martin added eight kills. Lindsey Swansby had 25 assists and moved within 55 assists of the Edgewood College all-time assists record. The Eagles hit just .028 for the match largely due to 26 attack errors.
Edgewood College will now prepare for their quarterfinal match in the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament. The top-seeded Eagles will host No. 8 seed Concordia University Wisconsin on Tuesday night at the Todd Wehr Edgedome. Should the Eagles continue to advance they would also host the semifinals next Thursday and the championship match on November 3.
