MEQUON, Wis. – The Edgewood College volleyball team cleared one more hurdle on their way to their first conference championship since 1996. The Eagles swept Concordia University Wisconsin 25-20, 25-12, 27-25 at the Buuck Fieldhouse to bring them within one match of the Northern Athletics Conference title. Edgewood College will go for the trophy on Friday night at the Edgedome against Alverno College.
Edgewood College (22-5, 10-1 NAC) opened the match with a 9-1 run to force a Falcon timeout. Katie Wedvick had three kills in the run, while Jessica Martin and Mallory Palmer had two each. Concordia Wisconsin (5-19, 2-7 NAC) rallied late with a 6-1 run to cut Eagles lead to 23-20, but Martin's sixth kill of the set and a Falcon attack error sealed the set for the Eagles.
The second set belonged to Eagles from the start. With a 13-9 lead Edgewood College exploded for a 10-2 run to put the set out of reach. Palmer had five kills in the second set while Kaylin Wayne and Wedvick teamed up for a pair of blocks.
The third set was a thriller with 14 tie scores and seven lead changes. Edgewood College actually faced a Falcon set point, trailing 24-23, but a Concordia Wisconsin attack error evened the set and guaranteed the winner would have to go beyond 24 points. Sarah Schuchhardt scored a kill to give the Eagles the lead, but the Falcons' Amanda Stahmann answered to tie the match at 25. Palmer scored another kill to bring up the Eagles first match point, which they won on a Concordia Wisconsin attack error.
Martin lead Edgewood College with 14 kills and hit .385 for the match. Palmer added in 11 kills support the Eagles' attack. Lindsey Swansby and Sam Himmelspach shared team-high honors with 12 digs each, while Swansby dished out 30 assists.
Edgewood College, at 10-1 in the league, can win their first ever NAC title on Friday at Sideout Cancer Night at the Todd Wehr Edgedome. Fans are encouraged to wear pink and donate to the Breast Cancer Recovery Foundation and watch the Eagles go for the NAC championship.
