BELOIT, Wis. – Saturday's volleyball triangular brought a mixed bag of emotions for the Edgewood College volleyball team. The Eagles saw their school record 13-match winning streak end at the hands of St. Norbert College 3-1, before bouncing back to crush Beloit College 3-0. During the first match, Edgewood College's Mallory Palmer surpassed 1,659 career kills, breaking the Edgewood College all-time record held by Mandie Armstrong for the past 14 years.
Edgewood College (21-5) hoped to avenge an early season loss to St. Norbert College. The Green Knights won the first set 25-19, before the Eagles responded by scoring the final three points for a 25-21 win in the second set.
In the third set, with St. Norbert College (18-7) leading 6-4, Palmer scored her eighth kill of the match and the 1,660th of her career. In that moment, she eclipsed Edgewood College Hall of Famer Mandie Armstrong who scored 1,659 kills in her career from 1995-98. Palmer finished with 17 kills against the Green Knights and six more versus Beloit College to bring her career total and the new Edgewood College school record to 1,675 kills.
Unfortunately, the Eagles couldn't match the Green Knights in the final two sets, with St. Norbert College prevailing 25-19 and 25-15. Katie Wedvick had 10 kills and committed just two errors, while Sarah Schuchhardt added eight kills. Lindsey Swansby had a double-double with 43 assists and 14 digs, while Sam Himmelspach led the Eagles with 16 digs. The 13-match winning streak by Edgewood College broke the previous record, set in 2010, by a full five games.
The Eagles overwhelmed Beloit College (2-20) in the second match. Edgewood College's entire roster got plenty of playing time as the Eagles took a 25-9, 25-6, 25-20 victory. Edgewood College opened up an 18-3 lead to start the first set, and scored the final 11 points of the second set. The Buccaneers stayed close in the third set, even leading at 18-17, before a 6-0 run led the Eagles to the win.
Jordan Winkler led Edgewood College with seven kills while Jessica Martin added six kills. Rachel Thomsen played the final two sets at setter and handed out a team-high 18 assists and had a career-high six service aces. Every Eagle who didn't play exclusively back row or setter recorded a kill for the Eagles in the match.
Edgewood College has the chance to break new ground next week. The Eagles play their final two Northern Athletics Conference matches and can claim Edgewood College's first conference title since 1996 with a pair of victories. Edgewood College will open the week at Concordia University Wisconsin on Tuesday and with a win, will play for the NAC championship on Saturday at home against Alverno College.
