MADISON, Wis. - Thirteen may be unlucky for some, but it's going to take more than bad luck to beat the Edgewood College volleyball team right now. The Eagles extended their school record winning streak to 13 consecutive matches with another sweep, this time a 25-16, 26-24, 25-19 victory over Lakeland College on Senior Night. With two Northern Athletics Conference matches remaining the Eagles are within reach of their first conference title since 16 years.
Edgewood College (20-4, 9-1 NAC) burst from the gate in the first set. Sophomore Sarah Schuchhardt and senior Mallory Palmer each had two to spot the Eagles an early 6-2 lead. Later Jessica Martin scored back-to-back kills to make it a 13-4 advantage. Eventually a solo block from Martin gave the Eagles' their biggest lead of the set 21-10 and they cruised home with a 25-16 victory.
Lakeland College (14-9, 4-5 NAC) got the jump in the second set however. The Muskies opened up a 14-8 lead after a kill from Melissa Cristiansen and forced an Edgewood College timeout. The Eagles clawed their way back into the match and gained the lead again on the serve of Rachel Thomsen. A kill for Martin followed by a service ace from Thomsen but the Eagles ahead 20-18. However, the Muskies rallied to gain a set point, leading 24-23, before Edgewood College scored three straight pointsto end the set, finished off with an assisted block from senior Kaylin Wayne and Schuchhardt.
Edgewood College threatened to run away with the third set, blowing out to leads of 9-2, 15-8 and 22-11. The Muskies scored six straight points behind a pair of kills from Christiansen to add some drama at 22-17. However, a kill be Katie Wedvick and Muskie service error ended the match.
With the victory, the Eagles secured their second straight 20-win season. The Eagles can clinch their first conference title since 1996 and the top seed for the NAC Tournament with wins in their final two NAC matches at Concordia University Wisconsin on October 16 and at home against Alverno College on Sideout Cancer Night on October 19.
Palmer had 15 kills on the night to bring her within shouting distance of Mandie Armstrong's all-time Edgewood College kills record. With 1,652 career kills, Palmer needs just eight more to surpass Armstrong's total of 1,659 and claim the record. Her opportunity will likely come on Saturday, when the Eagles face St. Norbert College and Beloit College in a triangular in Beloit.
Schuchhardt had 10 kills on evening and committed just one error for a .429 attack percentage. Schuchhardt also added a team-high four blocks. Wedvick and Martin each had five kills. Palmer led the defense with 17 digs for her third straight double-double and 13th double-double of the season. Sam Himmelspach had 14 digs including a huge save on the Muskies' set point in the second set. Swansby had 36 assists and a pair of service aces. Senior Laura Sweeney had seven digs while fellow senior Kaylin Wayne chipped in three kills on Senior Night.
