Eagles comeback from 0-2 hole to beat Linfield

PORTLAND, Ore. – On their final day at the Northwest Invitational in Portland, Oregon, the Edgewood College women's volleyball team turned in another electrifying victory. In their final match, against Linfield College, the Eagles came from down 0-2 to take win the match 3-2 and come home on a win. Earlier in the day, George Fox University topped the Eagles 3-0.

Linfield (1-2) came out and started the first set on a 10-4 run to take a commanding lead. Edgewood College chipped away and finally tied the set at 16 on a Lindsey Swansby ace. After the teams traded points, Jessica Martin gave the Eagles a 22-20 lead. However, the Eagles couldn't close the set out as they made four straight errors to give the Wildcats the 25-22 win.

In the second set, the Eagles jumped out early, only to see the Wildcats come back to take a 23-18 lead. After an Edgewood College timeout, Jennifer Lenz tried to spark a rally with one of her two kills. Sam Himmelspach then served an ace before a pair of Wildcat miscues got the Eagles back to within a point, but it wasn't enough as Linfield scored the final two points to take a commanding 2-0 lead with the 25-22 win.

The momentum turned early in the third set, however. Leading 14-10, the Eagles began to separate themselves as Swansby recorded back-to-back aces and Mallory Palmer capped the 6-0 run with a kill. The teams then went back and forth before Palmer gave the Eagles the 25-15 win with her third kill of the set and keep hope alive for a comeback.

With the score tied at eight in the fourth set, Aryn Wellnitz started a quick 4-0 spurt with a one of her two kills in the match.  Swansby then extended the lead to 19-14 with another ace and Kristin Manske put Edgewood College up 24-19 with a kill. Linfield scored a couple points, but the Eagles forced a fifth set with the 25-21 win.

Palmer took over in the final set, recording seven of her match-high 20 kills in the set. With the scored tied a seven, Palmer ripped three straight kills and Manske put the Eagles up 11-8 with one of her three kills in the set. Palmer then recorded three of the final four points to give Edgewood College the thrilling 3-2 comeback victory. The Eagles hit a whopping .308 in the final set, compiling 10 kills and making only two errors. The Wildcats hit .115 in the fifth set.

Manske and Palmer were the only two Eagles to reach double figures in kills with 10 and 20, respectively. Palmer also recorded 17 digs for a double-double while Swansby dished out 40 assists to go along with 23 digs and five aces. Himmelspach tallied 29 digs to lead the Eagles and set a career high. Laura Sweeney also reached double figures in digs with 17.

Earlier in the day, Edgewood College (2-2) squared off with George Fox University. The Bruins (3-1) jumped ahead early with a 25-19 win in set one and a 25-18 win the second set. They completed the sweep with a 25-17 win the third set.

Edgewood College well be in action again on Wednesday night when they travel to the University of Dubuque. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
