APPLETON, Wis. – The Edgewood College volleyball team played well at the Lawrence University Quadrangular, only dropping two sets. First, the Eagles topped host Lawrence 3-1 before beating Alverno College 3-0. They capped the day with a 3-1 victory over Cardinal Stritch University to end the day with a perfect 3-0 record.
In the first match of the day against Lawrence (4-7), the Eagles began to open up a lead after a
Mallory Palmer kill put the Eagles up 10-9. The lead swelled to five points a few times before
Jessica Martin gave the Eagles the 25-19 first set victory with her third kill of the set.
The Vikings came back in set two and snuck out a 25-23 victory to even the match. Neither team led by more than three points in the third set and they were tied at 26 before the Eagles scored back-to-back points.
Kaylin Wayne broke the 26-26 tie with one of her six kills in the match and the Eagles took the set 28-26 on a ball handling error by the Vikings.
The Eagles used that momentum in the fourth set. Palmer started a 7-0 scoring run with a kill to put the Eagles up 12-10.
Sarah Schuchhardt recorded two of her three kills in the set on the spurt that gave the Eagles a commanding 18-10 lead. Edgewood College went on to take the set 25-18 and the match 3-1.
Palmer led the Eagles with 19 kills and Martin followed with 14 kills.
Lindsey Swansby handed out 47 assists and
Sam Himmelspach recorded 25 digs in the victory. Along with Wayne and Schuchhardt,
Katie Wedvick also tallied six kills for the Eagles.
In the second match, Edgewood College went on a 12-0 run in the first set to open up a 20-8 lead over Alverno (2-9) with
Rachel Thomsen at the service line. Thomsen recorded three aces on the run, including back-to-back aces to cap the streak. The Eagles ultimately took the first set 25-11 before winning set two 25-18.
The Eagles went on another run in the third set. A service error, followed by a
Jennifer Lenz kill started the 6-0 spurt.
Kristin Manske recorded an ace and
Aryn Wellnitz recorded a kill to put the Eagles up 18-13. Schuchhardt put the Eagles up 23-14, and with
Macalah Finstad at the service line, the Eagles took the set 25-14 to sweep the match.
Wellnitz led the Eagles with 11 kills and Thomsen recorded a career-high 21 assists in the win. Himmelspach led the team with 21 digs.
The final match of the day was a see-saw affair early, with both teams gaining leads, only to see the other comeback. Cardinal Stritch (11-7) held a 9-6 lead before Manske started a quick 4-0 run for the Eagles. She recorded two kills on the run that put the Eagles up 11-9. The set was tied a 16 before
Katie Wedvick recorded a kill to give the Eagles (8-6) the lead. After another tie at 22, Palmer gave the Eagles the lead as the Eagles took the set 25-22.
The Wolves came out and took controlled the second set to even the match with a 25-14 victory. Edgewood College had to come from behind in the third set. Trailing 22-20, the Wolves committed a service error before Palmer tied the set with a kill. After an attack error,
Laura Sweeney gave the Eagles a chance at set point with an ace and Palmer ended the set with her fifth kill of the set.
Edgewood College quickly jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the fourth set behind the serving of Sweeney and Thomsen. That was all the Eagles needed as they went on to take the set 25-18 and the match 3-1.
Martin led the Eagles with 13 kills, and Palmer wasn't far behind with 12 kills. Schuchhardt and Wellnitz chipped in with eight kills apiece while Swansby handed out 39 assists.
Both Palmer and Swansby were named to the All-Tournament team.
Edgewood College will next be in action on Wednesday when the jump back into Northern Athletics Conference play at Wisconsin Lutheran College. First serve from Milwaukee is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
