FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Edgewood College softball team opened play at the Gene Cusic Classic with a setback to Franklin and Marshall College before bouncing back to take game two over Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. The Diplomats topped the Eagles 5-0 in game one and Edgewood College defeated MCLA 5-4 on a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh.
Despite being outhit in the second game against MCLA (1-5), the Eagles found a way to take the victory.
Emily Monson started the bottom of the first with an infield single before advancing to second. Starting pitcher,
Bria Hahn then sacrificed Monson to third before she scored on a wild pitch.
Nicole Kalscheur later drew a bases loaded walk to put the Eagles up 2-0 after the first inning.
Edgewood College (1-5) tacked on two more runs in the second inning as
Jessica Spitzer drove in Monson who doubled earlier in the inning. Hahn then scored on a
Pam Sommer single to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead.
The Trailblazers made a comeback in the fifth inning as they tallied three runs. Kayla Koumjian, Katie Ouillette and Kendra Hobbs each drove in a run in the frame. In the sixTH, Hahn was relieved by Leikness who got out of a bases loaded jam to keep the Eagles up 4-3.
After the Trailblazers set the Eagles down in order in the sixth, Ouilette led off the seventh inning with a triple to right center. Hobbs, the next batter, drove her in with a ground out to shortstop to tie the game at four.
However, the Eagles countered in the bottom half of the inning as Spitzer started the frame with a single to center field. Then Sommer tried to lay down a sacrifice bunt, but she beat the throw to first to put runners on first and second. After an out,
Jessica Diaz walked to load the bases for Kalscheur with one out. The count went to 3-0 before the Trailblazers pitcher threw a strike. The next pitch was low and away, giving Kalscheur her second bases loaded walk of the game and the Eagles the win.
Monson, Spitzer and Sommer led the Eagles with two hits apiece in the victory with Monson scoring two runs. Spitzer and Sommer each scored one run and drove in a run while Kalscheur drove in two runs.
Charlie Leikness earned the first win of her career while Hahn went four and two-thirds innings and didn't give up a run in her first collegiate start.
Franklin & Marshall (5-4) jumped out early in game one as Danielle Murphy started the bottom of the first inning with a single down the right field line. She advanced to second on a wild pitch before being sacrificed to third. Murphy then scored on another wild pitch to give the Diplomats the lead.
The Diplomats tallied one run in the third inning before exploding for three runs in the fourth inning. Megan Pauley recorded a two-run single to put Franklin & Marshall up 5-0 after four innings. The Diplomats loaded the bases in the sixth inning, but pitcher Leikness got out of the jam. The Eagles threatened with a runner in the seventh but couldn't bring the run around as they fell 5-0.
Sommer led the Eagles as she went 2-for-3 at the plate while four other Eagles recorded hits.
Edgewood College will continue play at the Gene Cusic Classic tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. eastern time against Lasell College and Stockton College. Edgewood College will provide live stats, and the link can be found on
