STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The Edgewood College volleyball team thought they had what was needed to snap UW-Stevens Point's 15-match winning streak. After winning the first set, however, the Pointers took control and claimed a 3-1 victory by scores of 23-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-15.
Edgewood College (17-11) may have surprised the Pointers early, taking a 6-4 lead behind two kills by
Mallory Palmer and a kill and a solo block from
Kristin Manske. The Eagles never relinquished the lead the entire first set, although UW-Stevens Point (24-6) tied the score at 22-22. From there Palmer and Manske scored back-to-back kills, and following a Pointer kill from Christina Brinkman, Palmer finished off the set with her sixth kill in 12 attempts. As a team, the Eagles had 13 kills against just six errors in the set.
The Pointers took control of the second set with a 6-0 run to turn a slim 8-7 lead into a 14-7 advantage.
Rachel Thomsen served three straight points, including an ace to pull the Eagles to 14-11, but that would be as close as Edgewood College would get.
The Eagles fell behind again in the third set, this time 17-10 before a swift 8-2 run put the Eagles back in the set and forced a Pointer timeout. Four different Eagles scored kills in that run. The two teams traded points until a kill by Morgan Bartkowiak and a block by Bartkowiak and Sarah Wildish sealed the Pointers' 25-22 victory.
Edgewood College struggled to regain their rhythm in the fourth set, committing eight errors to go with nine kills. A 10-1 run in the middle of the set gave UW-Stevens Point a 22-10 lead and sealed the Eagles' fate.
Palmer finished with a team-high 17 kills and 15 digs for her 16th double-double of the season.
Jessica Martin and Manske chipped in seven kills apiece.
Sarah Schuchhardt had five kills and a team-best .308 attack percentage. Sam Himmelspach led the team with 21 digs, while
Lindsey Swansby dished out 32 assists and added 10 digs.
The Eagles will host Mount Mary College in their final regular season home match on Wednesday night, before facing another tough task at the Benedictine University Eagle Classic on Saturday. The Eagles will face 19th-ranked Elmhurst College, followed North Central College in a pair of matches held in Naperville, Ill.
