NAC Championship (Round 1 & 2) results
HAVEN, Wis. – The Edgewood College men's golf team didn't panic when their putting game faltered on Sunday in the first round of the Northern Athletics Conference Championship. The 72-hole format allows plenty of time to recover. The Eagles shot 309 on Monday at Whistling Straits to take a 12-shot lead after the first two rounds. The final two rounds will be played the last weekend in April, with a conference title and an NCAA Championship bid on the line.
Edgewood College found themselves trailing MSOE by two strokes after Sunday's first round, shooting 317.
Andrew Cobb and
Mike Battista both broke 80 with scores of 77 and 79, respectively, but the putting game gave the Eagles trouble.
The Eagles found their stroke on Monday, with four of their five team members breaking 80. Cobb improved his first round score with a 75 to grab a share of second place individually with a two day total of 152. Battista also went a shot better and finished the first two rounds with a score of 157.
Senior
Brent Quade, who has been red hot all season turned a second round 77 to move him up to fifth place with a score of 158.
Logan Kranz and
Tyler Cobb rounded out the team with scores of 162 and 163. All five Eagles placed among the top 13 golfers in the 47-player event.
With a two-day score of 626, the Eagles lead both MSOE (638) and Aurora University (646). Last year, Edgewood College held a 10-shot lead going into the spring portion of the tournament, only to see MSOE overtake them and claim the automatic NCAA berth.
The NAC Championship will conclude in late April at Stonebridge Country Club in Aurora, Ill. The team with the best four-round total will represent the NAC at the NCAA Division III Championships on May 10-13 at Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida at the Mission Inn Resort & Club.
