JANESVILLE, Wis. - The Edgewood College men's golf team fought through Friday's high winds and went to bed with dreams of a championship in their own invitational. However, while the calmer winds of Saturday helped nearly every team, the Eagles struggled and slipped from first to fifth place at the 21-team Culver's Edgewood College Fall Invitational. UW-Stout took advantage and claimed their fourth straight title, nipping the University of St. Thomas by one stroke.

Edgewood College shot a sizzling 310 on Friday at Glen Erin Golf Course to secure a two-shot lead over Viterbo University, a feat made more impressive considering the winds which gusted to nearly 40 miles per hour. However, the Eagles managed just 321 on Saturday, the 14th best score in the field to place fifth overall.

Andrew Cobb led the charge for the Eagles' “Red” team, sharing the first round lead with Andy Smith of UW-Stout at three-over par 74. He shot 77 on Saturday to finish in a tie for fourth place at 151. Smith would go on to claim medalist honors with a two-day total of 147. Mike Battista also posted two sub-80 rounds, shooting 79 and 78 to place 19th overall. Logan Kranz fired a 75 on Friday, but found Saturday to be a challenge shooting 87 to finish with a score of 162. Newcomer Tyler Cobb and Brent Quade shot 167 each to round out the Eagles' top team.

Freshman Mike Schilling had an impressive debut, playing for Edgewood College's “Black” team, matching Battista with an identical 79-78-157. Fellow freshman Ryan McCrumb had Saturday's best round for the Eagles shooting 75 and finishing with a score of 159. Glenn Nowell had the top score on the Edgewood College “White” team, shooting a second day 77 and finishing with a 159 as well.

The “Black” team placed 10th overall with a two-day score of 648, while the “White” team was 16th with a total of 677. The “Red” team was the highest placing squad among 10 Northern Athletics Conference schools, which may be a positive sign for the season.

The Eagles will travel to Minnesota next weekend to compete in the Augsburg College Invitational in Ham Lake.
