SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – The Edgewood College softball team opened conference play at Lakeland College and could not keep pace with the Muskies offense. The Muskies used one big inning in each game and held the Eagle offense down as they took both contests 9-2 and 13-3.

Edgewood College (2-8, 0-2 NAC) jumped out to a quick lead in game one when Pam Sommer, the second batter of the game, ripped a double to left field. She then advanced to third on a ground out and Colleen Joyce drove her in with a single to center field to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.

The lead did not last long as the Muskies (8-6, 2-0 NAC) answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Chelsea Coenen and KC Blahnik ripped back-to-back singles, then stole third and second, respectively before scoring on a Sara Roberts single and Lakeland took a 2-1 lead.

The third inning looked promising for the Eagles as Kayla Rackow and Emily Monson laced consecutive singles to start the inning. However, Sommer ripped a line drive right back to the pitcher and Monson didn't have time to get back and was doubled off. Jessica Spitzer then tied the game with a double that scored Rackow.

Lakeland broke the game open in the bottom of the third inning when they plated five runs to take a commanding 7-2 lead. The inning was highlighted by a Leah Sheahan three-run double and a Corine Demske two-run home run. The Muskies then tacked on a couple insurance runs in the fifth inning to make the final score 9-2.

For the game, all of Lakeland's starters recorded at least one hit, while seven different Eagles accounted for Edgewood College's seven hits. However, the Eagles only had two hits over the final four innings. Claire Blake started the game in the circle and went all six innings, striking out three and walking two Muskies.

In game two, it was the Muskies that jumped out early as they tallied two runs in the first inning. After an out and a Coenen single, Blahnik crushed a triple and scored on an error to give Lakeland the early 2-0 advantage.

The Eagles responded in the top of the second inning as Rachel Elliott started the inning with a double and advanced to third on a ground out. She then scored on a Monica Humphrey single to cut the deficit to one.

The game would not stay that way for long as the Muskies broke the game open with seven runs in the bottom half of the second inning. The inning was highlighted with a three RBI triple by Roberts and a two-run double by Sam Shepeck as the Muskies took a 9-1 lead after two innings.

Monson tried to start a comeback in the fourth inning as she started the frame with a single. Sommer followed with a double to put runners on second and third with nobody out. Joyce then drove in Monson with a groundout and Sommer came around to score on an error by the first baseman to make the score 9-3.

Just as they did in the first game, the Muskies continued to tack on runs as they scored two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to take a 13-3 lead going into the top of the fifth inning.

After a led off out, Monson tried to spark another rally as she reached on an infield single, and then Sommer was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Spitzer then loaded the bases with a single to center field. However, the comeback was not to be as the next two batters grounded out to end the game and give the Muskies a 13-3 victory in five innings, due to the eight run mercy rule.

Elliott started the game in the circle and went three and one-third innings and Brittany Andrews came in and recorded the final two outs. Offensively, Spitzer and Monson recorded two hits apiece with Monson scoring one run.

The Eagles will open their home season on Tuesday when they host Concordia University Wisconsin at 4:00 p.m. at Ceniti Park in Verona. Edgewood College will provide live video and live stats for the double header. The links can be found on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
