MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Senior Jimy Landwehr had five hits and freshman Blake O'Brien earned his first career win in his first career start as the Edgewood College baseball team split a doubleheader with Concordia College Moorhead at the Metrodome. The Eagles won their third straight game 4-2 in the opener, before falling 8-5 in the second game.
In the third inning of the first game, senior Tim Barry broke up a scoreless tie with a single to center field that scored Ryan Walker and Landwehr. Landwehr had reached on a single to left field, on his way to a 3-for-4 game.
After Concordia Moorhead scored a run in the top of the sixth inning, Edgewood College (3-1) made the score 4-1 in the bottom half of the inning. Treye Dennison hit a leadoff single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Darren Besch. With pinch hitter Steve Binder at the plate, Dennison took off for the third. Concordia Moorhead (5-3) catcher Josh Hintz threw wild to third allowing Dennison to score. Binder eventually walked and came around to score on Landwehr's third single of the game.
O'Brien, making his first collegiate start, looked sharp for five innings. He pitched out of a one-out, bases loaded jam in the second and struck out five hitters over five and two-thirds innings allowing just four hits. James Bertakis relieved O'Brien with two outs in the sixth and despite allowing a run in the seventh, finished the game to earn his first career save.
In addition to Landwehr's three-hit performance, Barry added two hits and two runs batted it. Barry opened the season with six hits in his first nine at-bats.
In the second game, the Eagles couldn't contain the top three of the Cobbers' batting order. Jake Krause, Dan Wackler and Michael Carlson combined for nine of Concordia Moorhead's 11 hits. The Cobbers touched Edgewood College starter Miles Mayer for four earned runs on their way to a 6-1 lead after two innings.
Binder scored Mitch Mogensen from third with an RBI groundout in the second inning, before the Eagles put together a rally in the fifth inning. Scott Ortega and Jake Zadra singled to open the inning. They would move up on a balk before Ortega scored on a wild pitch. Zadra would follow him home on an RBI single by Landwehr. An Erik Massey base hit would move Landwehr up to third, where he would score on a Barry groundout. Mogensen then made it 6-4 with a single that scored pinch runner Dennison from third. However, the Eagles rally would fizzle when pinch runner Seth Astroth was thrown out trying to steal second and Mike Selvaggi struck out swinging.
Concordia Moorhead would tack on insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings to record their first win in four tries against the Eagles. Following Mayer, Brad DeVault threw three innings, striking out four and allowing just one earned run. Blake Hunt finished the game by throwing the bottom of the sixth inning.
Edgewood College will be back in action Saturday night against perennial WIAC contender UW-Oshkosh at the Metrodome. The Eagles and Titans will get underway at 10:00 p.m.
