MADISON, Wis. - To say the Edgewood College volleyball team is on a roll, is a heavy understatement. The Eagles tied their program record with their seventh straight victory Saturday afternoon. Aurora University was the latest victim, falling to the Eagles 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-23). The seven-match winning streak is the Eagles longest since the 1996 season, the last time Edgewood College won a conference title.
After a statement win over Benedictine on Friday night, it took Edgewood College (13-10, 7-0 NAC) a little time to get in gear. Tied 15-15 in the first set with the Spartans,
Laura Sweeney served off six straight points, including two aces, for a sudden 21-15 Eagle lead.
Brittany Bylsma ended the first set with a kill.
Jessica Martin continued her strong play off the bench, with five kills in the first set.
The Eagles trailed Aurora University (3-21, 0-7 NAC) again in the second set at a score of 10-7. This time, four straight points served by
Kim Lueck, finished off with another kill from Martin would give the Eagles the lead for good. #Mallory Palmer stayed red-hot, scoring four kills and a block in the second set.
Edgewood College head coach
Paul Schlomer, who won his 50th match for the Eagles today, chose to mix up the lineup in the third set and the Eagles' bench delivered a come-from-behind victory. After the Spartans' Amy Reynolds rattled off a kill followed by five straight service points, Edgewood College trailed 18-11.
The Eagles cut the deficit to 21-18 shortly thereafter, and then took command with kills on six straight points.
Aryn Wellnitz provided three of those kills and
Katie Wedvick two of her own to give the Eagles a 23-21 lead. Back-to-back points for Aurora tied the match at 23, but the Spartans committed an error on the next point. Wedvick then ended the match with her fourth kill of the set. Wellnitz piled up six kills for the Eagles with only one error, all in the third set.
Martin led the attack for the Eagles with 11 kills and a .304 hitting percentage. Palmer added seven kills and committed just one error for a .316 attack percentage. Palmer has had 24 kills and just two errors in her last two matches. Bylsma posted a team-high three blocks, while Lueck and
Sam Himmelspach each had 14 digs.
Lindsey Swansby finished with 32 assists.
The victory keeps the Eagles in first place in the Northern Athletics Conference, one half game ahead of Concordia University Wisconsin at 7-1. Preseason favorite Dominican University fell to Marian University to slip to 7-2.
