RIPON, Wis. – Tuesday night the Edgewood College women's volleyball team got their season underway at the Ripon College Quadrangular, where they played Ripon College and Carroll University. The first match saw the Eagles fight back to force a fifth set against the Red Hawks but ultimately fall 3-2. In the nightcap, the Pioneers were able to hold off a close third set to take the victory 3-0.

Edgewood College fell behind early as they could not find their hitting stroke. In the first two sets, the Eagles had 12 errors and hit under .150 both sets, which they lost 25-18 and 25-21. The third and fourth sets were a different story for the Eagles, as they found their stroke with 22 kills and only five errors to even the match at two sets apiece. The Eagles started the fifth set up 8-5 but could not complete the comeback as they fell 15-13 to end their short two game winning streak against the Red Hawks (1-0).

In her first collegiate game, freshman Mallory Palmer made a splash as she led the Eagles with 18 kills. She also led the team with a hitting percentage of .417 and tallied three solo blocks to cap off a memorable night.  Abbi Schultz was the only other Eagle to reach double digits in kills with 10. In her first match since 2007, Ellie Peckham tallied 24 assists to lead the Eagles.

The Eagles (0-2) again get off to a slow start against Carroll (2-0) by dropping the first two sets. The third set saw the Eagles make a run just as they did against Ripon, but this time it was not enough as they would eventually lose a highly contested third set 30-28.

In the nightcap, the Palmer was the only Eagle to record double digits in kills with 11 to lead the team. Freshman Carmen Terriquez was solid on defense for the Eagles by posting a team high 13 digs in the match.

The Eagles will be in action next weekend when they travel to Baltimore, Md. to play in the Johns Hopkins University Invitational on September 4-5.
